    Mine asks, "Got Dirt?"

We have three doors. Front door has our last name. Back door says welcome. And the other back door has dog paws on it. We call it the doggy door. Nothing exciting! I would like to get some with funny sayings though.

Is it a societal trend toward extreme selectivity in friendships, or age-related, increasing value of privacy, or what? My "welcome" mat is primarily to snag woodsy debris before the dogs and I track it into the cabin. It says, "Wipe Your Paws," but now I'll be looking for "Reconsider"!

I have them (coir) so the barn kitties have something to scratch and to keep husband dirt out of the house.

Recently I saw a welcome mat that had 'hello' on it when you enter the house, and as you left it had 'goodbye' on it !

Our Great Pyrenees would always lie in front if the door with his back to it... Part of breed instinct to protect the house! Now that he's gone our Maremma does the same.

I just moved and it just occurred to me that I left my mats at the old house - I hope the new owners like them as much as I did. I think they visually anchor the door (because the door itself is not enough, apparently) and having come from Canada, they also help with removal of salt in the winter. They do provide an inexpensive way to add some personality to your home which you can even change up depending on who is coming by.

It's kind of sad how many people have negative "welcome" mats. We've gotten so used to communicating on-line that we don't "welcome" people to our homes as much as we used to. My welcome mat is a black background with a big white dogbone in the center with the word Woof below that. "Woof" means "welcome" in dog language and everyone knows that I love animals, especially dogs.

We have a plain coir doormat with rubber backing that I purchased from Ikea. Years ago, when we bought new metal house numbers, Craftsmen style, I made a templet. I used the templet and black spray paint to add a little personal touch to the doormat. (I also use that template for our curb numbers.)

I like the mat that says "GOOD BYE" it will deter unwanted guests. lol where can I find one immediately.

I had one custom made thru Williams Sonoma with our last name. I love it!

I have a rubber mat with a design that somewhat mimics the wrought Iron grill on the transom window above the front door. I answered "no" to the survey because it does not say "welcome" or anything else on it. It is just a decorative mat to get a bit of dirt off your shoes before entering the house.

Just moved it to the side door of the garage - I can't open my new storm door over the top of my new slate step with the welcome mat in place! :o(

Ours matches the overall colors of our house's ranch red concrete floors with a big word "WELCOME" along with other earthy colors. I love it though it is looking a bit worn. May start looking for a new one. It's been there for several years. I, personally, would not use one that says anything unwelcoming, though I think they are funny. It's just not us.

We're currently on our 5th one in the 3 years we've lived here. The sun, sand, and salt of SW Florida have really taken their toll on them.

One thing that can't be eradicated by the weather here is the little sign I painted on the plate over the doorbell. It says, "RING BELL TO ACTIVATE TRAP DOOR". It's kind of fun to watch people stop, read it, then reconsider ringing the bell. I've seen some folks ring it and then jump way back. ;o)

There are four steps leading up to the door. I have tread mats on the steps and the Welcome mat on the top landing. The tread mats help prevent slipping, plus they dress up the steps.
I can't seem to find one I love. I change them pretty frequently, along with seasonal porch decor. Coir seems to mildew in a short time. Anyone else have that problem?

Last week I put out one that says "Wildlife Welcome" and a racoon pooped on it. True story!

I don't have one because it would get stolen.

Need a new one. Ours is just plain...charcoal-colored synthetic...ribbed pattern with rubber backing.

We had a neighbor with this one...

How do I know that everyone coming to my door will be welcome? Especially if I'm not home? If they are welcome, I will tell them in person, which means a lot more than a word on a rug. Besides, door mats are trippers.

    Ironic gift from a colleague.

I don't for my house. But for my camper it says " don't block fire exit!" Can't go wrong with FUNNY!

Yes, and I believe it sends a very welcoming message to guests. Also, if a property is for sale, then the care of a home is shown through nice first impressions.
My current mat expresses my feelings quite succinctly for all those who enter my home: "YOU HAVE ARRIVED".
I have a fleur de lis. I'm from New Orleans. Geaux Saints.

Until I slid on it and broke my wrist...

We have 2, one at each door- one says Welcome, with a bouquet, the other says Wipe Your Paws, has dog prints painted on it.

My favorite welcome mat was one my friend has that simply says, "Hi, I'm Mat!" Our welcome mat for our RV says, "Proud Americans Live Here"

it isn't necessarily to great guests. it's more like to help keep dirt out of the house.

I must have a welcome mat. It greets my guests with lots of warmth.

I would love to have one, but we get occasional showers so it just gets wet and soggy. I have a rug inside the door, but no clever sayings on it!

    Ours says "Go Away" ;-)
    last modified: 11 years ago

''Solicitors will be eaten.'' With a hunk of the corner bitten off. Trouble is, no one has a vocabulary anymore to understand it.

I have a mat for reducing the amount of water or dust hitching a ride on the shoes of guests.

We had a modern rubber mat, but a neighbor's cat always peed on it, so we removed it. Maybe we should buy one that says "go away".

Ours says "Please stay on the mat. Your visit is very important to us. Your knock will be answered in the order in which it was received."

However, I'm about to start a search for the "nice underwear" mat someone else posted.

We have one that Stanley Steemer gave us years ago, and it looks like it. I want to get a snazzy one but the Minister of Finance allowed the swallows to nest up on the door pinnacle...AGAIN...so you know what that means. He also built a small platform out of part of a roof shingle for some tiny little finches that were insisting in building a nest on top of the bamboo shade we lower in the summer to cut down the sun in the entryway (SW exposure). I'll be hosing down at least two areas of birdy #2 on the entryway bricks and scrubbing the door molding all summer.

The Minister of Finance gets my vote! Some things are just more important than welcome mats. You're lucky!

I had this one out over the winter. Loved it. Need to find something comparable for the summer.

Yes, but it NEVER says "welcome".

Our says "Ask not for whom the dog barks. It barks for thee."

We have a slight "barking at the doorbell" problem. :)

Yes, and it says: " Wipe Your Paws " with pawprints all over it ! My husband and I are vegans who love ALL animals :)
