Yes, they grow fine in SoCal, provided you can supply them with the watering they need to get established. Ron Vanderhoff, the nursery manager at Rogers Gardens in Corona Del Mar recommend the vitcellas and their hybrids as some of the best choices for your area. I would add to that the texensis cultivars. And the floridas, as they like a warmer than typical environment.

You should be able to find them at better garden centers, like Rogers. And sometimes at the box stores (Costco, HD, etc.) but don't expect a wide selection to pick from or necessarily the most appropriate choices for your area. And they can of course be obtained by mail order.
