Lipstick Plant

Can I put two smaller lipstick plants together in a bigger pot to make one big one?

Many years ago I was given a huge lipstick plant that I loved, loved, loved. All I can find are small ones in the garden shop. I have a perfect spot in my home where it blooms profusely. Please let me know. Thanks ahead of time. (I suppose this question applies to any plants)

Definitely. Aeschynanthus (lipstick plants) found in stores are typically pots that contain many plants anyway. They are propagated by placing many cuttings in a pot and letting them grow out, and each cutting results in a separate plant.

I agree...put the 2 small plants together...I got a nice one last year. I really like them too!

Thanks laticuauda! Several years ago I had one called zebra I think...it had beautiful leaves but the blooms were not as pretty ( they were green) so you can hardly see them...

This was taken several years ago...sadly it died when I we had unexpected "freeze" one morning **sigh**

Wow, so that must be the one with green flowers I hear about. I have what I believe is "black paagoda". The leaves look similar to your zebra but I think the design on your leaves is more intricate or something?

Do you think you can help me with mine? I've never had one flower, and I'm not expecting flowers from this plant in a 2 inch container....if you don't mind, I have my own post on it called "what's this weird thing on my lipstick vine?" I'm concerned that I won't get nice flowers. But is that really what they look like when flowers begin to form?

Btw, you are SO right, that is exactly what its called "black pagoda"...I found the name on my old notes I took years ago when I had the plant :o)

Here's a picture of what it looks like right before it blooms...it actually looks like a "lipstick" case,lol... and from that the blooms appear shortly after...I will check out your post. I'm not an expert on these plants however,lol...just lucky mine have bloomed for me!

The one that was lost to freeze was Aechynanthus longicaulis. One of the parents of "Black Pagoda". BP has orange flowers.

Laticauda, I keep several different varieties of Aeschynanthus. My favorite by far is A. 'Thai Pink.' It blooms in fall/winter and is one of the very few pink flowered varieties. It does get big though, with vines often reaching 6 feet or more very quickly. A good compact variety is A. 'Coral Flame.' It blooms several times a year on roughly 1 foot vines. Those 2 are my favorites. A. 'Mona Lisa' is a good one too, but I find A. gracilis and A. micranthus fairly bland. I've grown A. longicaulis and it's best as a foliage plant.
