Splitting stems

I have a clematis that has lots of stems coming from the base that has already bloomed. They are really thin and woody and some are splitting or breaking. Is there anything to do to stop the breaking and do they need cut back? I wasn't sure how deep to plant it with all the stems. . Thank you.

Is this newly planted? The stems on young clems can be very brittle and break or split easily. That is one of the reasons it is suggested to plant clems deeply - it helps to protect the stems and encourages the development of more.

Thank you for the help. It is a Clematis macropetala 'Blue Bird' I bought it in early spring in a 2.3 gallon container and planted it in a 3 or 5 gallon container. It bloomed and was blooming when I bought it. I plant the other ones I have deeper than the pot. but because of all the basal stems wasn't sure about this one. Is there anway to stop them from splitting?. If I prune it now would that help?
