Same thing happened to me! I had a perfect shady ecosystem going. If the dogwood needs shade, maybe you can provide something temporary (really ugly so your neighbors can see it) LOL! And then plant a new fast growing shade tree close to where that oak was.

Cornus mas grows perfectly well in sun. You may experience a bit of leaf scorch this season as the tree becomes acclimated to its more open exposure but it will adjust nicely. Just keep it well watered through summer.

its wasnt your tree... so there is nothing to be sad about ...

most things that are shade TOLERANT ... do just fine in sun ... there arent many things that REQUIRE shade ...

that said.. if too much sun.. they tend to get ugly in the summer.. with leaf scorch or some such ... but they rarely die from such ... and a lot of things actually have more vigor in sun .... and of course.. how far south you are.. makes a big difference as ot the intensity of the sun ....

frankly.. you observe it for this year... and then decide if it should be moved.. in the next proper dormancy period ... whenever that may be.. for your area ...

Katrina, the loss of a mighty oak is a very sad thing! But, we can't control our neighbors. I'm happy to learn that your dogwood will do fine in the sun! Good luck with it!
