You can work with the loveseats but you'll need to make a few changes. The rug is definitely not working with any sort of farmhouse vibe. I like this as a style for your room.

Find a red gingham rug and then go with accents like above - neutral stripes, red toile, some wood pieces... Curtains aren't bad but you need some ivory sheers - it would countrify it and would make them less translucent, which looks inexpensive. If you want new curtains, then I'd try going light taupe (?) to match the walls. For the fireplace I'd consider a large neutral pastoral picture with dark frame and a few pops of red.

Your table lamp and ceiling light are clashing.

Kaylen, if you are the one that picked out the sofas and the shelving unit, then it appears you happen to love modern along with country. If that is the case then here are my ideas to mix the two together.
Check to see if the legs of your current sofas are removable. I'm pretty sure IKEA sofas are screwed on. If that is the case I would look for something a bit larger and turned like your candle sticks. Quilts could lay over the sofa backs to help mix in the country feel.
The drapes could be replaced with ones made from drop cloths or natural fiber/colored fabrics. I'd also find another area rug in a more traditional style.
I would also suggest to faux paint the frames on the wall to look more like stained wood or pick a few colors to paint them and then antique them with a brown glaze. This could also work for the shelving unit.
A new ceiling fixture might help too as it's very pretty, but more on the glam side than either modern or country.
As for the fireplace wall, if you need more storage you could look for a pair of glass door cabinets, faux painted to look old or stained. Find a country scene print for over the mantel and add a few country look tchotchkes to decorate the actual mantel.

Hi Kaylen, why don't you try the loveseats parallel to each other in front of and on either side of the fireplace. Then you could put two chairs facing the f/p at the end. I would go back to Ikea and get some linen drapes in off white or in a simple pattern and ditch the red ones. I think you'll have better luck working with a neutral color on the windows. I would put chest (with candle sticks) in front of the window. You could collect some country-style plates and arrange them with some flowers etc. on top. I think this would be a fun coffee table (below) to put between the loveseats. Some bookcases on either side of the F/P would also be a nice look. Suggested chairs would give you an updated country look.

Here are some of the changes based on your feedback. I found this chair at Savers yesterday for $24 :) I'm planning on getting neutral curtains at IKEA and raising to celing. Also need to get something for above mantel but I'm wanting to hunt flea markets in KC for it.

Still not sure about the rug. ?? I think once I find a round coffee table that will help.

I think your rug is great. Just turn it & place the front feet of both love seats on the edge of it. Great find on the big chair. Add a light throw over side of the back with a light (color of your new drapes) lumbar pillow on the seat. I was going to suggest placing that great tall table into just the corner you put it in. When you have the dream piece from the flea market above the fireplace, it will be perfect. I love the changes.

can I say that I actually like the way you have done things. I love mixing up new and old together. you could lighten up the space by removing those curtains. So I agree with your choice about doing that. Keep it bland, light or off white. I'd also say get a larger carpet if that's possible so that it falls under the sofa. Get something to add over the fireplace. Id say to mix it up every now and then, add kilim style pillows. let the pillows be the only colours to spark up the space.

oh and collect a few more of those milkglass wares and group them together. I collect them myself - just love those things. Where did you get your shelves by the way. They look like the ones I would like to get for my place.

We got the shelves at IKEA. I think they were $79 each. Originally I was planning to spray them gold but I kind of like them gray.

Kaylen, everything in your room works except for the curtains. I especially like your gallery wall; you did a stellar job on that. I would hang burlap curtains, stick a burlap pillow on one of the sofas, move a black and white pillow to the new (ganga) chair.

And then I would start putting change in the piggy bank to get a stellar piece of art for the fireplace.

Wow! Looking great! And with a few minor touches (like Grover suggested) you will be totally wowed by your room. See? I told you the love seats could work.

Kaylen, I'm glad you like it. I actually am extremely satisfied with this makeover and think it has taken your room from just-not-quite-together to totally beautiful. Ditch those curtains. Bring in some rough textures with burlap and get a big piece of art, bigger lamp on the table, tall lamp or plant behind the chair. You really were on the right track all along. Now go finish it. ;-)

groveraxle - just out of curiosity what if you changed the colour the lampshade to a lighter one. Might it 'lighten' up the room more?

I love the new arrangement suggested, it makes sense for me to have the bench storage against the back of the love seat, I found it underwhelming on its own. Once you have rearranged it all and just change that red curtain, then you will tweak it with a couple of colour touches and maybe a mirror also somewhere.

What happened that just now I re-read your first comment that you didn't like your curtains.... I thought you had said you did..... well now I know....

Looking much better. Where in the world in KC are you going to flea markets? (KC - Kansas City?) I didn't know we had any! Also, if you do mean Kansas City, what did you think of the new IKEA store? I haven't made it there yet but plan to soon.

Columbia93 - yes KC and we have tons of them! Every First Weekend down in the West Bottoms nearly 20+ flea markets open up. Good Ju Ju, Restoration Emporium, Hello Sailor, Bella Patina, etc. it's so much fun!

If going fir farm house. Yes you missed the mark. Sofas are contemporary. If keeping them. And rug. Place soda facing each other. Is that chest with pictures above two sided? If so place in between sofas as a coffee table. Float sofas in room. The red panels not working. Go 2 shades darker than walls. Book cases ok. Just de clutter. Place 2 floor mirrors on either side of fireplace. Lean on wall IKEA sells 6ft wide dark frames. Try your gallery wall over fireplace. Cut down on number. I really dislike family pics in a living area. Rather see a big art piece there. Place family pic a bedroom or a hallway. I thing you need to abandon the farm house look. Nothing in this room says that. On end of sofas a small round table go silver or a color a garden stool would work. Place tall items on coffee table, only 3 items on end on mantel. TJMax great for accessories. Pick a accent color and add that in pillows , and window color for interest. Add a art piece over that chest. Z Galleries have nice ones.

Ceiling light is wrong. Either go a modern look fan. Or a drum style light in a black shade. 30"

Don't pull panels across window. Just hang on ends. Take rod to ceiling.

The room is looking good. The first thing I see when I look is the light fixture. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned, please work on changing it soon.

Yes the plan was for this one room to be contemporary but it's the first room you see when we walk in and it felt cold to me instead of welcoming. I'm not stuck with the couches forever but I love how everyone helped me learn to live with them for the time being.

The overhead light will be leaving us. We are adding can lights and removing the popcorn ceiling soon.

I actually love the fixture, we just used it in our bedroom redo recently, lol, but I like some old and new mixed. Your room is looking great, love your fireplace! :-)

I haven't read all the replies so it's probably already been mentioned, but I think if you lightened up your drapes it would really lighten everything up and go a long way. Our bedroom was very dark as there is only one window and then one smaller one on a door leading to a patio, but I always keep that one closed. We painted a very light color, which you already have, and then added some bamboo shades and white sheers, really brightened it up.

Here's a pic of the window in our room so you can see what I mean. Even if you aren't a fan of this style, I think switching out the red curtains would be great.

I LOVE the feel of that room. I had leather couches and I hated them so much. they were cracked and ugly tho...yours are gorgeous. you can definitly add some more textured pillows and throws. you can even make a cute pillow cover with an old sweater/flannel pj's. I think you can totally live with these couches, they're new and clean and look great. All you really need is maybe a bigger rug. I can see you have a kiddo-I have 2 Littles and do all/most my home shopping in thrift stores and ikea LOL. they have gorgeous rugs there and sometimes you can find DIY rugs on pintrest. you can also buy burlap fabric and make your own curtains/drapes. and that big ol chest you got there...you Don't need it...you can send it over to me

Kaylen, I'm following your story because it is similar to mine--except I have two big, medium brown,overstuffed leather couches that I am trying to work with! I posted on this site about a week ago and got lots of help, too! I hope my finished room ends up as nice as yours! Right now I'm still not liking it :( but hope it starts coming together.

Rebecca - lol! That chest is my fav piece that I own. I found it at a place called Hello Sailor in kc. It's actually a very old rifle case and still has the gun holders inside :)

Another update! Updated my curtains and added a pillow + ottoman to the chair. Removed the rug and stole a coffee table from another room. Still looking for a different coffee table but this will work for now. The rug was being a stinker and I couldn't make it work.

Those new curtains make an enormous difference. The whole space has calmed down. I liked the rug. It was being a stinker because it's too small, I think. Can you get another exactly like it and hook them together with carpet tape?

The coffee table works fine. However, I am not loving the ottoman in front of the chair.

Look for some big art for over the fireplace. Something fairly muted will keep the ambiance you have going now.

really starting to look like it should, more balance and logically placed. The white cream curtains pull the room together instead of clashing. You are still at a stage when you need more decorative accessories on walls and vignettes. I can't remember if we asked you but where on earth is the TV? ahah

I've been following from the beginning, and initially thought the red curtain panels were the main thing throwing off your room. Now, after implementing so many other wonderful suggestions, you have a fabulous room!

A few thoughts: I miss your rug, too! It's hard to tell room dimensions from the photos, but is there any chance the rug would work at the other end of the room? I love your IKEA shelves, but that side of the room looks otherwise quite empty - more like a pass-through to the next room. Maybe you could anchor it partially under the legs of the chest behind the sofa. Worth a try? Please bring back the rug somehow!

That antique chest looks great behind the sofa - better feng shui as well - but I can hear it crying out for its candlesticks back. They look perfect there, seem kind of lost on the coffee table.

I'm glad you're planning to use the light fixture in another room. I agree with others that it doesn't work in the room, but it's a very pretty fixture. It looks beautiful in Twiceblessedmom's bedroom, which I think is lovely, btw - so understated and peaceful.
