You really can't go wrong with either choice of black or white countertops with white cabinets. It's just a matter of what you prefer.

Black countertops are going to give you more contrast in the kitchen. You can also keep it clean and low maintenance with a pretty solid black Ceasarstone. Example:

You'll probably want a little bit of a pattern in a white countertop to help break up the space. I'm personally a fan of large patterned white granite. Low maintenance (relative to marble) but gives you a similar look. This particular reference may use marble...but you can definitely find the look in granite.

I do think butcher tops are a gorgeous contrast to an island, but the only downside that was stressed by our designer during our remodel was that it does require a lot of maintenance. Think about how much work it is to keep a wood cutting board beautiful - and imagine having to maintain that over the whole island space - risk of water stains, wine stains, constant oiling and sealing.

One way of still doing a contrast in the island is to choose a different countertop or even paint color for the cabinets. This example shows a reverse where the owner did a black cabinet with white countertop island. In our own house, we have white cabinets with grey contertops...and our island has a grey base with a white, large pattern granite on top. Hope this helps!! Good luck!
