Bulbs are GONE!

Hi all- My mom who passed away about a year ago,had a Wilford johnson peonies for about 13 years, and it bloomed last spring. This year, nothing came up. I decided I would carefully dig down and see if I could take the bulbs and move them. Well, I checked all the dirt about a foot down, and there are no roots, no bulb, nothing! I can't for the life of me figure out what happened. This makes me especially sad because my mom loved to see it bloom! What could have happened? Thank you!

Peonies do not disappear without trace, especially well established peonies. Probably taken - with or without permission. They have roots, not bulbs, so may be you should google search how they look like. They could die from Botrytis rather fast, but you would notice this disease - hard to miss.

I would have thought so too Karen but the area we dug, still had the mulch around it from last spring.

A herbaceous peony root that had been in place for that long would've been a couple of feet wide and probably at least 18 inches long. I agree with AlexUnder, the rootball was removed. There are some peonies that will regrow from relatively small pieces of root that are easily broken off when the root is disturbed. I'd keep an eye on the area ths spring and next for any above ground growth. I'm sorry someone removed your mother's plant without telling you, hopefully it was someone who thought they were helping to preserve it rather than taking advantage.

Totally agree with Lizbest1 - keep looking for growth in 1 or 2 years. Not all of them regrow, but some do.

Ugh, I'd be absolutely livid if this happened to me. My mum's peonies also remind me a lot of her, I don't know how I'd react to that. I hope you catch whoever did that.
