Kitchen makeover needed! With $300 budget

Very small 70's kitchen, complete with lovely orange countertops, portable dishwasher, and two awkwardly positioned doors. I plan to: fix ceiling, remove wallpaper, remove backsplash tile, paint cabinets, new cabinet hardware, paint or replace countertops, remove cabinet above stove and put in microwave hood.
Questions: what color for cabinets? White on top, chocolate brown on bottom?
Any other suggestions?

For the least amount of money try painting your cabinets BM White dove upper and lower to make the room look larger and brighter ,save the backsplash countertops and floor until you finish painting, you might decide you like it ,I love orange,also try updating your lighting..this will help it look bigger and brighter as well.Then new hardware or paint the ones you already have.

I see kiddie's art on the fridge so assume you are a young family. I think it would be fun to paint your dishwasher with blackboard paint and let the kiddies decorate it. If you are doing a backsplash I recommend spending a little to have the electrical outlet moved to behind the microwave so you don't see the wires. I agree with Brandi that you might actually like your countertop once the painting is finished.
