Scale - honey dew mess :(

I now realize I'm in a losing battle with a majesty palm and scale.

As I wave the white flag and prepare to toss it out....how do I clean my hardwood floor? :(

Sticky residue. Beautiful hardwood. House is only a year old, and hubby is pissed!

((Never again will I buy a 1/2 price palm at the nursery....shame too, as it was big and beautiful and the perfect size for a sunroom corner. If I ever get this cleaned up and eradicated I need something else in that space. Hope the cactus, parlor palm, and bromeliad across the room are o.k,))

That's terrible. :( I don't know if there is a great remedy for honeydew on hardwood floors short of re-sanding the floor but maybe someone here will have an idea. I think you would be justified in trying to contact the nursery to tell them they sold you a sick plant that caused damage to your floor and see if they are willing to do anything to make up for it.

Don't feel bad about not being able to save the palm. Majesty palms really don't do well indoors for the vast majority of people (maybe somewhere out there someone has a thriving one in their house, but I have never met or heard of someone who was able to keep a majesty palm alive indoors long-term). If you have a sunny place outdoors to put the palm where the scale won't affect other plants, you may actually want to try just putting the majesty palm out in the yard for the summer so you can at least enjoy it for a bit before tossing it when the weather turns cold. I suspect it would probably do a lot better over a summer outside than it did indoors.

Once you get things sorted out and have given it some time to hopefully make sure the scale don't reinfest a new plant, there ARE other palms that are more likely to do well indoors that you can try.

I'm not at all sure it is reasonable to assume the palm was infested at time of purchase. First, you would have a very hard time proving that and second, as the other saying goes, insects happen!! Generally sale plants at nurseries are sold 'as is' and outside of any warranties.

Try a Mr. Clean eraser pad ( slightly moistened) on the floors. If that doesn't work - and it should - try dabbing with rubbing alcohol. Both of these may affect the finish to some degree.

Leona, I hope that you've very thoroughly inspected your other plants and that you will continue to do so. It is very easy to spread a scale infestation from plant to plant.

I would totally assume that a discounted Majesty came with the pests, but doubt you can do anything about it, as gardengal says. Innocent consumers are victims of retailers who sell this very problematic palm species. Sadly, they are very easy and inexpensive to reproduce for the mass market and will continue to flood the market.

Be sure to inspect any plant carefully before you bring it home and isolate it carefully before exposing your other plants.

It looked great when I brought it home. Made it a year and a half. Inspected, no visible pests. Could they have been in the soil?
How close would it need to get to other plants to spread? Scales don't fly.
Cleaned the floor with windex and then immediately with hardwood floor cleaner. So far so good. Another treatment may be in order.
I've got veem oil coming so I can preventively treat the other plants.
