Evans cherry tree doesn't grow?

I've had an Evans planted for this is the 6th year and it doesn't grow much . It's got thicker a lot thicker but doesn't grow taller and produce much new growth. It was a $100 nursery tree when I bought it . It produced every year and this year looks like it will produce the most I've ever seen on it. Do these things commonly produce so much they don't grow much ? How can I get some size and growth to this tree . I want to start reworking it but don't get much new growth it seems like it's vigor is very low.

Normally they slow down when producing,..you might be able to cut out some branches.

There is not many branches .if I cut any more it will look bad

give it miracle grow once every 2 weeks until mid July

Knowing Matt, he does know how to boost plants.

Boost them so much they don't come back the next year lol haha

I've done that lots with small trees.

And I do fertilize it. In spring before trees wake up say in March or feb.I put down bone and blood meal and slow release fruit tree fertilizer that way by the time the tree wakes the goodness has already absorbed into soil and the tree can start feeding right away gets a good boost right off the hop.Than I will give them a few shots of miracle grow but over the years lol have learned that liquid fertilizer is not good to use past June here or the tree will get 4feet of fresh growth and 90% of it will die back unless it's a brooks plum they can handle it. If I do that to apricots I loose all last years growth and some. I dont even think giving it to any tree that is rated higher than zone 3 is a good idea unless we get nice winters which we have recently I had zero dieback on all my trees some are zone 5 trees that do ok if I don't mess with them I've learned .

I do ignor the Evans compared to my apricots and plums. It's in crappy sandy rocky soil I did dig a hole and filled with good compost before planting but that was 5 years or 6 years ago now.

Don't give slow release fertilizer to your trees here unless you do it properly like when the trees are dormant.or they will grow like crazy right until sept,my experiences you loose most fresh growth here

I fertilize mine every year till mid July with no die back or trouble from aphids.I do not get 4 feet of weak growth moderation is the key

From what I have been reading about Evans cherry and my experience with one plant over 10 years till I killed it. If they like the conditions that they are in, they are very good. If not, they are very frustrating plants. Mine would grow very well during the season then next spring would sporadically die back.

I've fertilized Evans right into September and it never dies back. I thought one year it had die back but it was just a dead branch or two. Evans are perfect for calgary.

Definately the hardiest in my yard. It's planted into sandy gravel silt that drains fairly well. This is why I think it doesn't grow much the ground is crap it's planted in.

By the looks of your Evans posted in flower, looks fairly large, they slow
down at that stage,.I have Evans in poor soil doing good.

From today, Evans about 25 years old, the tallest about 12 to 14 feet.

Is that a entire row of Evans? How many do you have?

Yes the Evans grew crazy in year 1 and 2 and has kinda just stopped. The trunk is about same diameter as a can of pop. It grew over the fence to get sun now it's kinda just been sitting at that size for 2plus years. I am starting to like my Evans cherry again.

Had to buy a minimum of a 100 little plugs I think, grew them one year in pots, ..gave some away, some died, about 15 I killed with roundup 2 years ago because they were planted in a low spot and never produced, perhaps have 40 left but suckers are producing now also.
