most literature does say full sun for these but they will bear fruit with about 6 hours of direct sun.

the one in my neighbor's yard is sited like that. they don't care for the taste of the fruit so I get to eat all that I want (the large shrub is a holdover from his grandmother's plantings)! I don't know for sure but I would think only 3 hours of direct sun would not be enough.

More sun will produce a much nicer looking tree - that needs a LOT of elbow room. This pic is from a few yrs ago, this tree is MUCH bigger now. Apparently juglone tolerant too, that's a black walnut tree to the L.

Figs will take day long, southern sun as long as their feet are moist enough. I have some that are full, all day sun, some part day/afternoon sun. I have only had issues with them in containers in full sun. Soil gets too HOT.

Going to go against the grain heavy here for anybody new and plant in mostly shade. Now thats relevant to your location and microclimate. If its a dry area with a lot of sun obviously mostly shade, near a structure that gets run off from the roof and keep cutting the central leader back into bush form. Figs may not get the full production in the shade but in my experience most stuff grows better only getting about six hours of sun a day, even things people say put in full sun like tomatoes etc. Ex look at areas that are exposed to full sun. Often times they are the most beat up, sandy, heavy clay, cracked, weeded areas of peoples yards due to evaporation.

Survival means protection from winter cold. Thats why planting on the south side of a weather break or wall is a good idea here, and we are 8a, except for every 15 years or so we get 7b cold and the figs we have freeze back but then regrow anew. Its a system of sorts.
