You need to properly identify which Foxtail you have, because there is a grass called Foxtail that is very palatable to most animals while others cause problems as you describe. Some grow quite well in poorer soil than a more preferable pasture grass will so aside from consulting with your states Cooperative Extension Service, check that soil for pH, nutrient levels and drainage.

Well, without knowing exactly which Foxtail it is, I can tell you it is definitely not the palatable one. We have abundant wildlife, horses, and goats and none eat it. I can certainly check the pH and nutrient level. Will changing that get rid of the Foxtail? Prior to this invasion, the clover was doing very well, as was the rye (the horses preferred the clover over the rye). Those grasses are still there, but being choked out. Drainage is excellent, as the property is on a slope.

Thanks, gardengal. We are organic here. I called Shelby Filley and had a long conversation with her. There are two primary approaches to this. One is to mow very short and force the few grazing animals we have on this pasture to keep it short (since right now there is way more pasture than they can keep short. The other is to PLOW (versus till) which turns the seed deep under. Then reseed before rains with an annual seed, like rye, for competitive purposes. Prior to seeding we need to amend the soil. She also encourage me to learn what the different grasses look like as they emerge. Hmmm, this feels huge. If I had nothing else to do in my life...
