Although ants don't eat plants their tunnels can affect the roots' ability to function. I have had ant nests kill plants. So, on balance I'd prefer not to have them where I'm growing vegetables. I tend to encourage them to move on by disturbing them through cultivation and watering rather than using any kind of pesticide.

Ants are really part of Ma Natures recycling machine, although in the process they seem sometimes to be pests. Just keep disturbing the area they are nesting in and they will move elsewhere.

I think ants are evil and will take over the world.

I just planted a michelia alba tree and a couple days in and they are already trying to farm aphids on the new leaves, had to hand remove them.

I hatched some baby praying mantis and all the ants bunched up to eat them, I had to hand rescue the baby mantis.

In the house I make a mix of honey water laced with some boric acid to poison them.

I had some thatching ants try to move into my new raised beds the first year I had the garden. Those things build massive mounds (there's one at the property edge that's probably more than 2 feet tall, maybe getting close to 3') and they seem to bite. I just kept watering that really well every day and they moved along. I see them in the garden, but they haven't tried to build there again. We just leave that big mound alone and don't go near it. I always sort of wonder if they bother the person who lives on the other side of the privacy fence -it's not near our living space, but it is somewhat near theirs.

Even though they bite and have huge mounds, they're not like fire ants. Fire ants are horrible.
