Purchased a balled and burlapped tree with tons of wild grass and thistle near the root crown. Best way to remove these without damaging the trunk?

I was thinking pull the weeds to the best of my ability, then a thick layer of newspaper and mulch around the trunk but not up to the trunk (no volcano effect).
