Please need help with my fireplace wall...

I want to use white glass tile either 12x24 or smaller. My question is should the tiles go vertical or horizontal. I am placing them on the entire fireplace wall. Can I place the tile on the front side only or do I need to wrap it around to the backside? The fireplace is also off center so will a smaller tile be better than a larger tile? The house is contemporary design.

Horizontal. It will look more polished if you wrap the sides.

White glass is going to make your TV, which is already too large for the firebox, stand out like a sore thumb.

thank you for the suggestions, I am also going to put a surround on the firebox to make it look larger.

Have you considered stacked stone? Contemporary and textural . . .

I did consider it in a white color. Do you think it should be in the grey tone?

I couldn't find a white glass tile to put on your fireplace, so I just painted the wall white. Keep in mind you'll get a lot more reflection from the glass, so the contrast will be greater than this rendering shows.

If this were mine, I'd probably go almost black on that wall.

I would suggest installing them horizontally. I think your white tile could add a nice modern look - don't think that because you have a TV on that wall means you have to have it blend in, not true! Do what you like the best. Best of luck with your project!

Yes, I meant stacked stone in a lighter color, the gray looks to heavy.

I also agree that dry stacked stone (no grout) would look great. Also consider changing the white storage unit to a built-in that will look seamless next to the fireplace. If you want a contemporary look reconsider adding a surround- a cleaner look would look more contemporary

. For my fireplace I took the L brackets that you use for dropped ceiling tiles, spray painted them with black hi-heat paint and used them on the edges, so that you have somewhere the stone can end.-If you end up going with white-you can do this as well.

PS I am redoing my beams to match the new maple cabinetry and I have to re-paint the surround sound speaker to match the wood better;-)

how about stale tile? it's easy to work with, is not terrribly costly, and will add a great texture into your space. i agree that white tile will contrast too sharply with the black tv and black FP...a grayed slate might even it out.

    Hello luckydog1,

    1. Run your tile horizontally. Your wall is not very wide, but horizontal tiles will enhance the appearance of your wall by making it appear wider than it is.

    2. Wrapping the tile around the wall is common, but if you don't like that look, I suggest using a metal trim from Schluter on the edge of your tile installation. The trim will lend a refined look to your tiled wall.

    3. A 12x18 or 12x24 tile should look fine with your off-center fireplace. Ask for a tight grout joint of say 1/16 of an inch. With such a fine joint, your tile will have a slab-like look, which is often sought after for fireplace surrounds.

The photo below has a 24x24 tile with what looks like a 1/16 grout joint. Notice it looks very cohesive and slab-like.
