First off - You need to decide if that's really the right place for a dining area...
...it appears that this is your entry area with the front door and staircase. Where do you drop your mail, purse, keys, cellphones, etc and hang your coats? Do you really want to have family dinners in the entryway?

I'd take another look at other areas in your home that are 1) away from the entryway, and b) closer to the kitchen - That's where your dining area should be.

I would definitely put a small chandelier over the table. It gives some visual interest at a different height level in the room.

I agree with bepsf. I'd sacrifice any other living space in the house to move the dining table away from the entry way. Do you have any other place you could use for dining?

Hi! Thanks so much for the suggestions. I just want to clarify. The door you see in the picture is a side door that goes out to a wrap around porch. We often have dinner at the dinning room table and then go out to the porch for after dinner conversation (over looks a lake on that side of the house). The front entry is elsewhere. Would you go for an old fashioned chandelier or something different?

I agree with sheilaschmitz that a more modern look is the way to go. I would choose a chandelier with arms though, rather than one with a shade, to keep the sight line open.

If I had a view of the lake I'd open up that wall if possible. Move the large wood piece of furniture to another wall , and make sure your mirrors reflect something beautiful. I would consider a contemporary chandelier with faux wax candle lights or drum shade pendant that is not too deep.

I agree with luvit. I'd remove the large bookcase. It makes the area look more like an office.

I would paint the walls in a warmer, brighter colour. This one looks like eggshell and is dull with the dark wood furniture.

Definitely move the large wooden piece to another locale if possible, if not switch it with the mirrors. Find a George Jensen style sputnick looking chandelier, and cover the far wall floor to ceiling with a natural linen drape between the door all the way to the corner. An iron rod with rings should suffice.
