Your boxwoods have a formal look to them now. Do you mind if we remove some of them to make it a little more natural looking?

I don't mind. Between the deer eating and tearing at them. They are stressed. We already had to remove a few at the side of the house. The four on the far left are just dead so we're going to pull those out.

I'd go straight out from the blank wall on the right and plant a small tree. I want to suggest dwarf eastern redbud, but your deer are going to eat it up. If you live somewhere humid you could try pawpaw, not as pretty but it does have edible fruit.
Then I'd replace the two larger shrubs on that side with shapely conifers (eg dwarf Alberta spruce). These three plants and the tree are your anchors for this bed. Go as big as you're comfortable by mapping out the outline with a rope or hose. I'd take out some of the boxwood so there's not a line running through the bed. You can fill it in with flowers and grasses like you requested. These are all tolerant of partial sun, deer resistant, low maintenance perennials suitable for zone 6. (But run specific plant ideas by your local nursery to see how they'll do in your specific location.) Feather reedgrass, switchgrass, turtlehead, blazing star, bee balm, and catmint.
Plant in multiples, so 3 or more of the same plant in a grouping. Put the taller plants toward the middle and back and work your way out.
