My front yard needs a new maple, and I would like to make it a yellow leaved variety of a Japanese maple. So far I am considering Acer shirasawanum 'Jordan' and Acer palmatum 'Summer Gold', but am totally open to other suggestions. The location is open ground in a large front yard, no size limitations, actually the bigger the better. I am in zone 5b and would like something that is reliably hardy here, after the losses of the last two winters I am more cautious. It get sun all day, from about 10am on. The soil is loamy clay, holds water well but is not overly heavy or water logged. The tree will be very visible both from the street and my house, and I will look at it every day. I would like to have a tree that keeps it's golden-yellow color more or less throughout the summer. Nothing against darkening to chartreuse, but I would love to find a tree that keeps a nice yellow coloring even in the summer. Can you suggest any varieties that will match most or all of the criteria? I am somewhat flexible, but would like your experiences and suggestions before I spent some major bugs on a larger specimen.
