Opps. Okay no Ice cubes. All maybe 3 more are left to flower and thats that. I live in NYC. It's in the mid 60's at the moment. I might keep them outdoor during summer. Mine had no soil just a peat mix. I waited until I saw it was pretty much completely dried. Do you know what this type is called?

It looks like all of the buds that are falling are in the same area? The plant could have fallen over damaging the buds or if they were stacked close together in the store the stems could have been tangled being damaged when pulled apart.

Sometimes a plant will drop buds when the environment changes but that would usually be all of the buds or moving from lower buds to upper buds.

The ice cube thing is another story altogether. Most people here, (myself included) will say it wont work, its just some marketing gimmick to sell plants. We have always been told to use lukewarm or room temperature water to prevent shock and how most orchids would never encounter ice in nature.

But then there is my mother in law with her huge plant that's always in flower telling me I should just throw ice on all of my plants, I just shake my head and walk away. By the way, I will NEVER have her house sit for me.

Lol thanks James. I guess no more of ice on my end. I don't believe it was dropped. If it does help we had the plant in a closed car for over 4 hours in hot sunny day in the mid 80's. We came back from the mall and noticed how hot the car was. But even when we got it home it was fine. Maybe it is the environment changes.

Hot sunny day inside the car would do it.

The plant shouldn't be in soil, the mix should be open free draining bark chunks or something similar. The plant is likely a hybrid of a few different orchids but for arguments sake I would just say its an oncidium mix

One of the owners of Silva Orchids has a booth at the Union Square farmers market on Saturdays in the south west corner. He is open to chat about orchids if you stop by. Tho it is difficult to walk away empty handed.

Hot car gets my vote.......Boy, dealing with two extremes in one thread......Ice cubes and hot cars. Heat affects buds more at certain stages of development than others. A long spike with blooms in different stages of development will react differently to heat stress. Some buds may cook immediately, droop, and may or may not fall off the spike. Some buds may open completely normally, and some may take a several days to begin to show signs of distress.

Good news is that the plant itself probably is not hurt.

Your plant is some sort of Oncidium. No way to ID it without a tag. I agree, no ice.

We will have to refer the ice thing to Myth-Busters. As far as the name goes, if you bought it along to a meeting of the local orchid society it would be benched in the section for Oncidium and Oncidium Intergenerics. A bargain for $12.

The prices range from $25 to $45 which is fair.
