Ran short of water. Did you stick a finger in the soil to know for certain?

Water adequately and then wait to see what happens.
Another point - is it warm enough for basil?

I watered everything pretty good today so I'll check it tomorrow, and it's been in the 70s with lows in the high 50s / low 60s

i once got unfinished compost from such.. and it turned out to be a nightmare to deal with

The soil is a 50/50 mix of topsoil and compost. Most of the compost was from our city pile, and maybe 25% was from bags. I have never had a problem with this compost before and it didn't look unfinished, but it's a possibility.

On another forum someone said the beans could be cucerbit crumple virus. I admit I have never heard of this or experienced it, and I'm not entirely sure if it affects us in MI.

you might be a week or two early to have warm weather veg outdoors already ... in our wonderful MI ...

all of your problem could simply be cold damage ...

where in MI ..

soil looks pretty dry also ... hope its not that dry at the root level ... dont really care about what the surface looks like ... insert finger and find out ...

It only got down to around 39 on Tuesday where I'm at, but I agree that it was a bit chilly. These are in raised beds with a soaker hose an inch or so below the top of the soil and about 6 inches from the stems. I ran it for close to an hour on monday and then yesterday I hand watered with a sprayer.

I'm hoping it will recover if it was cold damage (or anything for that matter). I have peppers and tomatoes that don't have any signs of stress and look great (tomatoes are around 2ft tall). Granted, I started those indoors in march so they were pretty strong plants already.

Just hoping I don't lose all these beans... oh well.
