Looks wonderful! Great job. We're in California as well... and looking to significantly reduce our lawn square footage in the front yard. This is lovely. Curious if you replaced the old concrete sidewalk or if you just resurfaced it? We have the same sort "worn out" look with our old concrete... debating how to handle.

Hi teinalh. Thank you for your comment. We ended up replacing the old concrete sidewalk with a new one. We are in Long Beach and the city was responsive to our request to repair the side walk. It took some patience and some time investment before it got done. It was worth it as it made a huge difference as you could notice.

Lawns are not very functional in a front yard for play or relaxing unless you sit out there a lot. Lawns need a lot of water and care to look nice. Other plants are very interesting, and there are many low water use plants to choose from that will grow and change over time. Plants have a variety of leaf color, shape, and flowering times to keep this area fresh. And if you don't like gardening very much, boulders and succulents will also provide interest without a lot of water...especially the boulders. :)
