Still picked some Evans Cherries, ..over a month ripe on the tree!

They're very nice right now with good sugar and dark flesh...

Evans Cherries from today,..well over a month from when they turned red, gives me fresh eating off the bush for a long time.

Mighty nice looking cherry pie. It reminds me of the pies I experienced many years ago when I had a part time job at a swiss restaurant while in high school. The owner and his family came from Switzerland. All their fruit pies had no top crust, very low in sugar compared to what most recipes in the U.S. call for and always had a custard type filling with the fruit. Thanks for bringing back the memories. I always heard Evans ripened late near Alberta so I guess it is true.

Yep..that's my Mom's recipe, that's how she made all pies when growing up in Switzerland, now my wife adopted it.

Growing season is winding down, most apples are down, some pears are still hanging...

With several light frost's which we had it surely brings out nice fall colors.

Are those trunk protectors on your orchard trees or paint? Sure looks like paint. Do you use trunk protectors/cages/a few metal rods opposite each side of a trunk, Konrad?

also trying to identify a deep red apple that made very deep rosey red applesauce. Seems like could be a cross with Macintosh. Flesh is red with some white around the core.

Bailey Nursery in St. Paul, MN grows Evans in #5 containers. They do not sell to the public but do supply numerous garden centers in your state. I would contact your nearest garden center and ask if they buy from Bailey Nursery. They should be able to get one in for you if Bailey still has any left for next spring. Those from Bailey are budded so you will eliminate the horrible root suckering Evans has when on own root.

I was harvesting still some berries this weekend...but most are for the birds.

Oh my goodness did you ever make an amazing landscape, I am in awe! I love the pictures you capture, they sure tell a huge story. I must know how to make that pie, it looks to die for! I would so love an Evans Cherry tree with a non suckering root stock. I am curious if I could graft it to an Apricot or Plum tree or root stock? I hope to have myself a mini orchard in my little yard of Plums, Cherries, Pears, Apples ,Apricots, once I get the trees established that I hope for.... I can graft different varieties to these trees a few years down the road. It will pale in comparison to your beautiful orchard but will be amazing to me in town having lovely fruit fresh, baked and to process in to jams, jellies, syrups, pie filling , cored and canned. Thats so huge to me :D

Here (North Italy) the colours are still not so "brown and yellow", but soon they'll be....fall is coming :)

You rock Konrad!!! We get Hummingbird moths here too but they aren't as colorful as yours. I have never seen them active in the day but they go wild for the Moonflower blooms from dusk through daybreak. Found one of the moth's catepillars for the first ime this year, what a huge, green critter it was.

The little golden spice pear are a treat taking for snacks..the larger, Menie is very nice also but only have about a dozen, it took over 10 years to fruit!

It's just about over...apples are done and all fallen ones are cleaned off by the wildlife.

I got my part and still have to do some juicing.

I have spotted a bedding area and put a camera up.

On high demand here is the swiss pie recipe.

Ilg's fruit pie recipe from my mom.

Pastry dough tenderflake we used, or you can make your own dough. (use one piece of tenderflake) roll out. Mix 1/2 a cup of sugar with 1/4 cup flour in a separate bowl. You can add some Almond flour or other nuts for flavour, (wasn't done here, but optional). Sprinkle
the empty bottom of pie plate with the sugar and flour mixture to
cover, then put dough in pie dish and poke with fork (around 10 times). sprinkle more of the sugar and flour mixture on top. Add fruit, (can be anything you like) then sprinkle the rest of the mixture over.

Whip up 5 eggs (using fork) with some milk or cream (approx 4 tablespoons) and pour over the fruit. Bake at around 320 - 350F for 35min. Then check if eggs are baked (nice color, no liquid left).

You sure have a lot of fruit loving creepers kicking around, lucky for them you dont mind sharing lol

I have heard of Elderberries but have never seen or tasted any here in zone 2, in flavor what are the comparable to?

The ones we mostly hear and grow are the hardier red one's but to my knowledge can be toxic in the seeds.

These black berries are regarded as one of the top health fruits because of antioxidant etc.

There are several species, these you can eat right off the bush and mildly sweet flavored, not like European which looks alike but you can't possibly eat them raw, ..I used to pick in Switzerland along edges of forest, mom made jam from it.

Today I got treated with my wife's Ruby apple pie recipe, for apples it's great but you need a good pie apple, we find the Collet makes the best.

Tenderflake dough is used again, 2 pieces this time, one to cover. Cut apples and mix with some flour, cinnamon and sugar to your liking.

Man, I wish I had a week with your wifes recipe book! Haha It looks so nice and juicy :D

Just got one tree with about a dozen apples still up for wildlife,...amazingly, everyone which falls down gets eaten by...
