If you like the olive green in the kitchen that is a lighter shade, perhaps you could just bring the same lighter olive shade into the family room so that it is all one color. I like the cream color of the fireplace, perhaps if you go with a lighter olive color, you could recover the couch in a cream color.

I think olive green is a good color for family room, but you can yes, recover the couch. I know and saw many beautiful olive green family room. I saw this one that may inspire you:

Repainting will be much quicker and cheaper than recovering the couch so if you are happy with it's colour and condition look at new paint.

I seem to think for the images that the sofa would be really nice off the wall color of the family room

I'd float th sofa in front of the fireplace

spend your efforts on a rug that will help with pulling the rooms together..however if you are goiing to paint paint prior to moving in

A great way to unite spaces is to paint them the same color. Pick a color that you love something that looks great with your beautiful sofa or with the sofa and rug (I agree you need one), bring more pattern and color in with pillows, draperies, and other things. PS Love the bed in there :)

Repaint your walls with Benjamin Moore's Nantucket Grey--trust me, you will not regret it. Would look great with charcoal grey couch too!

The floors are nice! However that white is killing me- and the mantel-- The first thing is to paint it brown- not a red brown. Something that matches the floors.
I like using blue too- navy also can be a nice accent. Add a cream.
Try going out and buying a tree- fake or real.
I agree the room needs a large area rug. However its a large room and can have seperate seating areas. You can do more than one thing here. Split up the room- see what your needs are.
Or put in a sectional sofa.
A glass cocktail table can look great in here too.

Another vote for painting. You do not like the color so make this your home and by all means, float your sofa and a cozy rug in front of the fire place. Rich pewter walls would be lovely with the green kitchen, a gray blue mantle and accessories in green, light blue, gray and orange will pull the rooms together with peaceful, soothing harmony
