Safe Fireplace

I wonder, since this is a real fire, how you can nestle it among so many trees. I live in the mountain foothills of Southern Calfornia and would love to build something like this outside without creating a forest fire.

Yes, you'll need to be mindful of your surroundings, and meet any local fire codes.

The chimney for this fireplace has a spark arrestor built in, to prevent burning embers or ashes from drifting. They are commercially available, or you can fashion your own. Placement and maintenance are key as well; thought this fireplace appears surrounded by trees, none have branches over the chimney flu, and trees are pruned regularly to keep it that way.

Could you please describe the transition presumably taking place under the metal awning through the wall and into the chiminey? Or is there an optical illusion and the firebox is recessed into the wall slightly?

You are correct there is an opening through the masonry wall, leading to the steel chimney. Smoke is directed by the steel shed roof to the opening.
