Does the cabinet go over the window? We have the same issue in our home. What does it look like from the outside? That is my bigger concern

The cabinet does go cross the window. What i've made for the other side is a cafe curton out of some elephant gingham, using a very thick wooden pole and very thick gathering. It looks cute and covers up the rear. Alternatively, you could have a board made and paint it a plain colour to match the decor.

See the image below; but with more gathering and no top curtain....
