Use Them! As I once could do. Otherwise, I have only had to use steel wool and oil on a few. If it’s bad enough I clean with a wire wheel, emery cloth or 4” grinder and emery disc vs grinding wheel and then oil. I only have 1960’ tools that are older but have been used vs weathering.

Preserving vs using, you could probably clean to bare metal and seal but I feel a good metal with light oil away from moisture will resist rusting.

If you just want to preserve them leave the rust on and rub with a little oil. The rust acts as a preservative to prevent more rust.

I think I'll try the steel wool and oil as some have mfrs. marks and town names, thanks dd.

Phosphoric acid is the main ingredient of commercial rust removers. It converts the rust into a stable compound to prevent further rusting. It's typically used on rusted car bodies before painting. I like the ease of application of Naval Jelly (Available at Amazon, see link below). Hmmm - I don't see the link. No matter, just go to Amazon and search for Naval Jelly. That's Phosphoric acid in a jelly-like consistency so it will stick to surfaces while it works, instead of running off.
