A few years back we installed a garden shed in our back yard. In the aftermath of the installation and a few really frigid winters and our border of Thujas along the fence began to die.

This spring I had the "brilliant" idea to pull the dying Thujas and plant roses along the fence instead....completely forgetting that one of the reasons the thujas were planted there (other than trying to provide a weed barrier) was because of the three very large Black Walnut trees immediately opposite the fence.

I can't do much about the Walnut trees as they are on conservation land. Those most I am allowed to do is prune branches that overhang my yard. My hard is 17 feet wide and about 50ft deep. The walnut trees stand at the far back left corner of the yard with the nearest trunk about 10 feet from the fence. So basically my floribunda and hybrid tea roses (just planted in May) are about 10 - 20 ft from the trunk of the tree and within the drip line of the canopy. Are they a lost cause? I bought the specifically to go along the fence and don't really have anywhere else in the yard to put them (assuming I'd be able to still move them)...unless I leveled some of my raspberries nearer to the house in favour of the roses...
