Do any of the skeins/hanks have labels on them? If so, if you could either post a picture of the info or tell us what weight it is, that would be most helpful. From your description, it is hard to tell if it is fingering or lace weight, or something else entirely. What is the recommendation for needle size on the band? I'm sure we'll be able to help you if we have just a little bit more information.

I think I'll test out a gauge. The smallest needle size I have is 1 3/4 mm so I'll start with that

If you search the RAVELRY database for Berga, you will find a page showing twelve yarns by them. The one you have is Parti. I found only one person who shows a project knit with that yarn and she used 3mm needles for it. I don't think 300 grams will be enough for an adult sweater. I do think a scarf would be very nice. My suggestion is to start with two strands of one color (I suppose this means that you would have to use both ends of one skein), knit about an inch or two in length, drop one strand and pick up one strand of the next color and knit the same distance with those two strands, drop the second strand of the first color and pick up the second strand of the second color and knit the same number of rows with the two strands of the second color, drop one strand of the second color and pick up one strand of the third color and knit the same number of rows with those two colors, drop the second strand of the second color, pick up the second strand of the third color and knit the same amount of rows with those two strands, then reverse the order to get back to the first color, and so on. That way you will have a nice blend instead of solid stripes. Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Donna, thanks for taking the time to respond. I searched the Berga website in translation but couldn't find info, it hadn't even occurred to me to try ravelry. Before bed I check the gauge for one of my patterns for an open vest using the 2 mm needle and that wasn't even close so I think you're right. I think I'll do socks though, too many scarves. I wear double socks all winter long because I'm outside everyday I'll get looking for a pattern that I like.
