Eat in Kitchen Layout Help

We're currently planning a kitchen/dining remodel and would like some fresh thinking before we take the plunge! Our current thinking is to keep the existing galley style kitchen on the left hand side of the room, shown in the diagram below with a half width wall at the 5m/16ft mark to give some separation to a play/living/occasional dining room on the RHS. A constraint not shown on the diagram is a sizeable step needs incorporated, current thinking is to have two small steps one at the 3m mark and one at the 5m mark from the LHS, as the ceiling height changes at these points! I'm thinking of having a small extendable table in the kitchen area for informal eating for our family (it will be a little bit of a squeeze), the table could then be moved to the RHS and extended if entertaining. Natural light is from the South-East at the "bottom" of the diagram (the red-chair is a nice little sun trap). There's currently a sizeable wall/chimney at the 5m mark which will be removed, my current thinking is going completely open-plan would be a bad idea as the space is relatively narrow and is likely to feel like one big corridor. The RHS of the room will have a chair or two, a desk for a computer/gaming and a general children's play area. Any thoughts/suggestions?

My suggestion would be to rewrite the intro, using inches and feet rather than metric (yes, it's universal except for US) and spell out RHS and LHS. I think I know what you mean, but much easier to read. Try breaking this into a few paragraphs...and I think you'll get more responses. Forum traffic diminishes GREATLY if you have to stop and study the requirements.

And, please draw in any steps. Are they the grey marks between the two rooms? Hope this helps you get more input :)

I agree. I'm in a metric country but am used to dealing with feet and inches on this site. Another idea would be to break down the measurements a little bit more. lengthwise especially the area where the table is located. It might be just me but when I try to enlarge the drawing it probably only increases in size by about 10% so perhaps a bigger copy could be included.

All of the above. Could you also give us a drawing of the whole floor the kitchen is on? It doesn't have to be exactly to scale so something hand-drawn is fine. Please include all windows and doors.

Thanks for the constructive comments folks. The long wall (Wall A in the diagram above) is 29.5 foot, the maximum width (Wall B) is 11ft, narrowing to 8 foot. At present there is a large step at Wall D (end of sink unit/near table in pic below). The door to the room from the main house is on Wall B (near red chair in pic below). The door to the back yard is on Wall C (beside sink unit in pic below), with 3 windows along the length of this wall.

Here's another diagram which hopefully makes the layout a little clearer. The basic problem I have is how to break the room up so it doesn't feel like a corridor.

Do you require table seating? Are you interested in counter seating? For how many people minimum?

It's for two adults and two small children, so ideally we'd like table seating to "eat as a family".
