Something really durable!

I had 3 blue prince and 3 blue princess hollies put in my side yard 2 years ago. One died and was replaced last year. (don't know which) This year the replacement died also. None of them are doing great, but at least the other 5 are alive.

We have had two bitter cold winters in Upstate NY and the way the houses and land are, the wind really rips between the houses; so it is not a particularly nice environment. They are all on the north side of the house, so they don't get much light. The one that died twice is the one closest to the house, so it got the least light, and maybe the most wind.

Any idea for a replacement that might be more durable, but from a distance would look sorta the same?

if.. in fact.. there is not enough light.. then nothing is going to survive ..

can you.. in any way.. better define.. just how dark it is back there???

and keep in mind.. durability.. is gauged on an established plant... recent transplants may not be so ... and it might take them longer in less than adequate sunlight ...

There are some small conifers that might take the cold and wind better. But I don't know your zone or area. Do you want 'evergreen'?

I am on a lakeshore that the map says is 6a, but the last two years it has frozen over; so I bet that makes it 5b like it is away from the lake.
Evergreen or not doesn't make much matter to me. No one will see it in the winter.
It catches a little morning and evening sun in summer, but probably not much otherwise.
