I like to match cabinet handles to shape of handles on appliances...gives a unified look.

pulls are more popular and in style , at least that is what I observed , and more practical and easier on cabinet doors - with door knobs usually a finger nail hits or schratched the face of the door ( unless you install large ring - washer type first on the door

This is an example of a knob that sits on an escutcheon plate. Some escutcheon plates are built in to knobs, others can be added or not.

Here is a kitchen I built with a combination of granite knobs that matched a granite top on a hutch and wood knobs that matched the rest of the cabinets. This was the lady's choice.

Here's another kitchen I built with vertical pulls on the doors and drawers except for just a few drawers. This was the customer's choice as well.

You can mix them or use one or the other it doesn't matter. Knobs are more difficult to use for elderly or disabled people.

I believe as long as there's some uniformity and consistency you can use any types...
