How about something like the Cornelian Cherry Dogwood. Makes a nice small tree.

I just planted 'Meader' American persimmon tree in my front yard. Its got interesting bark, and is reputed to have decent fall color.

Quince is attractive.

We made the drive over to Edible Landscaping in Afton, VA the other day, and the guy there recommended the Hachiya Persimmon, which apparently grows to about 12 ft tall & wide, so we decided to give that a shot. Unfortunately, when I started digging the hole, I discovered that our yard is an unwelcoming mixture of clay, sand, gravel, and buried bricks. So fingers crossed that anything can survive in it....

I have a fuyu persimmon in my front yard. It is not large and I get loads of persimmons.

Lapins is one of the few sweet cherry varieties that is self-fertile.

Pomegranate trees are not that tall, they're almost more of a shrub, but can grow to be rather wide. Both their fiery-orange blossoms and the shape of the fruit is very ornamental. They can grow to be very wide though, if you let them. If you do get a pomegranate, you might want to go with one of the Russian varieties that will do better in your climate.

Mulberry is another option if you're looking for a big tree.

Asimina triloba (Paw Paw) could be perfect for a zone 7 area :)
