I live in central Indiana 5b. The temperature dropped to -20 and stayed below zero for 30 plus days. It was the 3rd coldest winter ever.

The 'PJM' rhododendron could have root rot - as this cultivar often does - or it may just need to be watered. Both this and the azalea would be a lot happier if you mulched them, although if the rhododendron now has root rot that won't make any difference.

Cool, moist, freely draining acidic soil for rhododendrons and azaleas - with never any strong chemical fertilizers. In fact I was reading yesterday that there is a soil scientist or other involved professional that thinks NO garden plants should be subjected to direct applications of chemical fertilizers - instead if a need for some has been shown it should be applied to compost first and then the compost applied to the plants a few weeks later, not the previously unprocessed (by the soil system in the compost) fertilizer by itself
