Yes you can. But I would use something like strips of sheets to support them. That would be less likely to damage the plants. If you've just planted your tomatoes, you still have time to find more stakes though.

One stake per plant has more than enough support problems all on its own without trying to use it for two plants. Stakes are the least effective way to support plants to begin with and when used at least 2x2" stakes are recommended as the 1" ones easily break over from the weight of the plant. So instead consider the Florida Weave method Linda recommended or plan on at least 3 of the 1" stakes spaced around each plant and lots of string.

I agree with Dave. I do it the hard way using one 1" pvc pipe per plant. Then I add shorter stakes to the branches that grow out. Not easy but I manage to keep all the tomatoes off the ground.

I agree with Dave. One stake per plant is hardly enough. I use like 3 stakes for 2 plants and do some weaving in addition to tying.
One steak per plant is ok when you prune to a single stem. NOT enough. I let at least 2 - 3 stems per plant. That takes more stakes and weaving to support.. With just one stem production will be way too low.
