Revised layout - Please critique

last modified: 11 years ago

At the bottom there is a link to my previous post.

I made a few adjustments to the following plans (which are different from my previous post.). I switched trash and DW. And instead of two small pull-outs on each side of drawers under the cooktop, I thought I would put a larger pullout at the wall by the kitchen entrance, from floor to ceiling.

This is the link to my previous post.

All suggestions welcomed.

Have you thought about having no cabinets in the peninsula so you and your husband can sit and face each other? It gets the seated person out of the walk way into the kitchen from the dining room.

Nice plan. Two observations are that you might want to swap the location of ovens and fridge, and you might want to reconsider peninsula seating.

If you do move the fridge, it will be a few steps further from the stove but keeping it at the end of the kitchen nearer your dining room will limit the grazing traffic in the kitchen.

Peninsula seating adjacent to a dining area is something I've struggled with, but in the end it just looks odd to me, redundant, if you will. Keep it if you love it, but your kitchen may benefit more from additional storage than from eat-in seating.

Just thinking how I use a kitchen - I would switch the the fridge & cooktop OR move fridge to right of the sink.

Am thinking of the great "ice, water, stone, fire" GW rule.

Benjesbride, We thought we would put things not used often in the cab in the peninsula. It will be mostly 2 of us at the peninsula, but it's something to think about.

Eam44, we originally thought of putting the fridge by the dinning room but realized that we will use it far more than the ovens, so we thought it was better to not have it by peninsula.

blfenton, I'm not sure if I understand or if I was not clear. The shallow pantry on the side of the fridge, will be stationary shelves. The 12" pull out cab would be as you described - split in the middle. Something like this, but 2.

mdln, I think if I put the cook top opposite the sink, I would need to add a prep sink. Fridge might be in the way on the right of the sink of the basement/door to deck .

    Link - narrow pantry

This is a picture of what I mean - open it from the side and not the front. It's from the kitchen of another GW'er and I hope she doesn't mind me sharing her idea. It's the last picture of her reveal. I tried to post just the picture but couldn't. You might not like the set-up but just a thought.

blfenton, that is what we are considering - see 1st drawing

Oh sorry - I thought you were doing a pull-out.

Have you considered a range instead of wall ovens? If you won't use them much, it could greatly increase your counter space.

    1. your 2 doorway/isles (cooktop/sink) are too narrow.

Since you're making the changes, consider a solid 36" or 40", meaning the end of the countertop/knob-handles, not just the base cabinet.

    2. Re peninsula:

    - no corner susan

instead, do a 30" 3-drawer facing range = much more useable than a susan

and do a 24" cabinet facing dining room (for infrequently used item, like crockpot)

    3. remove the 12" pantry: expensive for what storage you get.

instead, think about shallow pantry facing cooktop

    example: storage between studs

Now you can get another 2-5" for the isle.

    4. Did I already suggest this?

I like my 18" trash pull out under my 36" sink base.

    example: trash pull-out under sink

Then you can make the trash into a 24" 3-drawer base = more storage.

    5. Do you already own the FD counter depth fridge?

Way more expensive than standard depth but get way less storage.

I think you have the space to recess a standard depth fridge, into the closet.

    goodnight,

If you're going to do the cabinet facing DR, be sure to panel the whole peninsula, so it looks like you have cabinets along the whole back.

    You want this look: paneled

Not this look (where only the real cabinet has doors)
