Full/Queen vs Queen Beds

11 years ago

I've been trolling CL for a Queen sized bed. I often see add's stating Full/Queen or Full or Queen. How does that differ from a Queen sized bed? Are they different? We're temporarily downsizing from a King so I need as big as possible but smaller than King.

Thanks for your insights & knowledge.

    Full = 53" wide by 75" long approx. - that's just 15" wider than a twin (38" wide)

    Queen = 60 x 80"

    Queen will be most comfortable for 1 or 2.

    Here's a link to the Better Sleep Council site with some good info.

    With the bed frames, headboards or footboards, the side slats are adjustable to accommodate a full or queen mattress. Both DH and I had full size when we were single. We got a Queen maybe 5 years ago, and it is much better for two people. That little bit of room makes a huge difference.

    You definitely want a queen and not a full. Full is more like a twin and a half. Also, it is getting harder and harder to find bedding for full-size beds.

    Although the annoying part is that full queen bedding (blankets, bedspreads and comforters) are a bit too big for one and a bit skimpy on the other.

    Full/queen bedding is my pet peeve. It's either full or it's queen. it can't be both. You want a queen bed. It's the smallest that accommodates two people comfortably.

    A full/queen headboard will accommodate either a full size bed frame or a queen size bed frame. This headboard shows how there are two places to attach a bed frame - either full on the inner slots or queen on the outer slots.

    But if you attach the rails to the inner slots (full) won't the rest of that bottom part with the other slots show? Thanks but no thanks. I'm with dedtired - it's either full or queen not both.

    And then there is the real oddball -- the full xl. It is the width of a full but the length of a twn xl or queen. My youngest son was told his student apartment would have a full, but one girl we talked to suggested that we get the knit sheets at Target because they stretched and fit the beds better. Those student mattresses aren't that thick, so I went back and measured one. Full xl!

    Thank you all very much! So I was sure that I didn't want a Full as DH & sleep in a Full when we go to my mom's. I was confused about seeing Full/Queen instead of just Queen.

    So Nutsaboutplants; utilizing the rails that you got I would be able to put a queen sized mattress on a full bed headboard?

    That would be great if I could convert a full to a queen because as luck would have it, last week on a morning run I came across this Chippendale style bed that someone was throwing out. so I ran super fast, got home and drove back to pick it up.

    If I could covert this bed after I clean it up I would be so very happy!

    Foxes pad, yes, you'll be able to put a queen size mattress on a full size headboard/footboard with the converter rails.

    Glideaway DRCV1L Full-Queen Drop Rail Bed Frame Converter

    This is the product I bought on Amazon for about $110. (No affiliations other than as a customer). With our prime membership, shipping was free. Make sure you take good measurements of your bed. As you'll see from the reviews, the manufacturer takes care to call you to get the details before shipping the item. I got a c-clip that was not the right size. When I called glideaway, they sent me a new set of rails to correct the mistake. Google "full to queen converter rails" and read in general, but if you want to take my recommendation, read abouthis particular product. You can then decide. It would be nice if you can put that pretty curb find to good use. If you have specific questions, I'll be glad to answer them. I have a broken ankle and am recovering from surgery. Otherwise I'd take pictures to post.

    With the converter, you'll only be able to convert the frame - not the headboard and footboard. So, how does that figure in? I would think depending on the measurements of the footboard/headboard for a full bed - using a queen mattress (and the converter), it might not look right - if you know what I mean???

    I apologize for the bad pic. Not mobile and hobbling on a knee scooter after an ankle surgery. So please ignore the poorly made bed and mismatched sheets, etc, but here is what it looks like. It looks better in real life than in the picture. You don't see the size difference between the headboard and footboard and the mattress that much. Again, not a good pic.

    Nutsaboutplants, I barely notice that the mattress hangs out on bit on either side! (And your bed is really pretty too). I figure that I usually keep a bulky comforter folded at the bottom of our bed anyways & that always hangs out beyond the footboard of our current King and I can 'mask' the headboard overhang w/ strategically placed pillows.

    Thanks for posting the pic it really helped a lot!

    The pineapple finial is missing from the headboard and 3 of the wheels are missing. DH is getting a finial for me & sorting through his piles of furniture junk leftovers at the shop for 3 wheels but we probably won't use the wheels. As much as I love to see old wheels on furniture it just doesn't seem sturdy enough for a bed that sleeps 2 adults. I think that I'm going to paint it a high gloss white.

    Mr. Fox said that I can't swap out the king for the queen until we're closer to getting the house on the market but I don't know..........I'm very excited about the prospect now!!!!!

    Thank you!
