Thank you for your response, my thoughts exactly. We were going to go with a glass back splash with grey tones but I thought it was getting too busy! The appliances are stainless and the back wall will have 2 barn wood shelves on either side of the range and hood, so the back splash will only come up as far as the bottom shelf. Would you have any pictures of other kitchens you could send me with your ideas? Thanks so much

you can really never go wrong with a classic white subway tile...timeless and modern all at once. here i'd forego the dark grout, so the pattern isn't overwhelming. but also consider beadboard. if painted in a glossy white oil paint it will stand up to the wear and tear and scrubbing of a kitchen, and the look is clean and works great with rustic elements. plus, it is soooo budget friendly! don't forget that you could also have granite copany add to your order and mount the countertop material as a backsplash.

Great artist style! This could be viewed as modern Southwestern or Industrial design as well. Subway tiles do immediately envision. I recommend Calacatta marble; it will repeat the pattern of the distress wood that's on the island.
