Undersink pull out garbage

Hello Paul,

My husband and I would really really like a pull out garbage under our kitchen sink but our cabinet maker has no idea how do this for us. Can you give us any tips on how you accomplished this?

Thanks!

This cabinet is fairly wide so there was room to put 1 drawer on either side of the plumbing. The cabinet interior is deeper than most standard ones so I had room to instal deep drawers (about 26" deep). for standard depth cabinets you may be able to fit 2 medium sized bins in each drawer. The slides are Blum undermount that have a soft closing feature. They use very little space because they are mostly under the drawer box and out of the way. The drawers are dovetailed maple but you could make them out of baltic birch or melamine just like any other drawer box. I prefer using drawer boxes verses special pullout systems because they (drawer boxes) are easier to instal, easier to adjust and tend to be more reliable. They are less prone to be knocked out of adjustment even when compared to expensive pullout systems which i find difficult to adjust and sometimes can operate rougher and more sloppy then the soft closing slides. I can also attach the door to the drawer box securely like a drawer front so it is one motion to access the garbage. if you line the bottom of the drawer with a plastic liner it will be easier to keep clean. The cabinet maker or you can source the containers from your local hardware store or building centre. I prefer to source the bins myself as a cabinetmaker because I know what my clearances are inside the drawer, behind the drawer and above the drawer. One site I like to shop at is Richelieu Hardware but you will need an account to order from them or to view prices. Ideally the water lines and drain should come out of the wall through the back of the cabinet. It takes some planning because the plumber needs room to instal the water lines and drain along with the sink. If your kitchen is tight for storage under the sink pullouts are the best solution for utilizing every square inch of storage.
