Yes I can tell by all of the angles and different flooring that it does create a bit of disarray. Do you have different colour walls as well? Or is that just the lighting of the shot? I would consider painting it all the same, if not. I would also consider getting a new couch. An L shape to place against the wall that the current one is kind of against. The aisle you have in behind your current couch seems redundant. And the shape of your current couch looks like it's adding to the dysfunction. Hence, replace it if you can. I would also look at getting a couple of chairs to place across from the double doors. This will help to square off your space a bit more.

Oh and consider a new carpet. The current one does nothing in terms of colour and is too small in proportion to your couches.

1st thing, take out the mantle and lower the TV. All your pictures are hung too high. You need bigger art piece over the sectional and the rug is not big enough. Take the lone picture behind sofa and arrange with the 2 on other wall. The mirror on the wall by French doors is way too ornate. I would change out the coffee table for something round or oval. I'll send some ideas for replacements. Bring in another chair next to the table at end of sofa.

Open up the area with a glass top.

The sofa is much too awkward and bulky, as is the armchair. Go with smaller, simple sofa. Go with with a glass top coffee table (as suggested previously) and a sleek mid-century modern chair. You can still add flair with your throw pillows and window treatments, go bold with a pattern in those areas. Finally, given the odd angles maybe go with an asymmetrical rug; a long faux sheepskin rug would be a good choice.

I rather thought the curve of your big sofa was good for the shape of the room. I do not like the protruding mantle, nor the ornate mirror. I would rather see the art lowered & grouped more together or some larger pieces of art.

Your rug is not large enough & one which extends over the tile coming into the room may make the room look better.

I don't think that adding any more pattern such as shown in the zigzag chair or striped rug will help. Slipper chairs are very uncomfortable to sit in as well. Your furniture is very bulky, so if it is in your budget to replace any of it, think smaller scale. Items that you can see light through such as an acrylic coffee table or like the two smaller scale leather & chrome chairs as shown by thedoctordonna would be good.

I would also check Ikea for some grommet top drapes to install from just below the ceiling down to the floor in colors matching the walls will help unify the whole room.

These are rather inexpensive additions or changes. No need to tear up flooring or get all new furniture. We can work with what you have. The only thing that might be work is doing something with the FP wall and TV. Decide what you are willing to add or replace, take out all the accessories on the mantle and on all the other tables and we can start from scratch. Let us know what you want done.

im going to pull the reins back on the negative comments. not everyone can replace complete floor for example. and you have done a great job trying to make the space work.
is that an L couch that you have just re arranged? looks kinda like it...

so, a left side L couch, light tan would be nice if you can change it.. if not can this be put together that way...

remove the oversized chair all together.

put the tv in that corner. take it down from over fp.

large shaggy or soft pile off white rug.

take all the paintings and collage them on the back wall.

lighter wood rustic would be good for all the side end tables. paint can do the trick in a distressed look

put the orange rug under the dining table.

the large mirror might work over the mantel but its pretty big!

I will hold off on any comments until I hear from kaylee. A room has to be functional as well as pleasing to the eye. I hate to tell someone get rid of a chair and move the TV there if they want to keep it. Small things like removing the coats from the wall and lowering the pictures and offering advice on better furniture arrangements is a far cry from asking them to get rid of furniture and tearing up flooring. How are they going to feel better about their room, if they can't do major changes and told they need to get "rid of it". Sigh.

i just said to remove the chair, its to big, and make the couch back into an L if possible...as far as the tv goes, she said its not functional, which means she knows things need to be moved. Please dont assume to know my intent. I want to be helpful.. thus far the room is not functioning as is.

You can't get sleek with oversized and overstuffed seating, so that's your starting place. They'll be your lasting pieces and so should be where the investment goes. Other furnishings and accessories can be less expensive and easily changed out when you tire of them or trends move on.

flair lighting you suggested holding the reins back on negative comments. Well it is probably just as hard to change to a different sectional as it is to change the floor. Let us just try to help her with what she has.

I certainly did not intend to ruffle anyone's feathers, just saying maybe we should ask if the chair is needed or if she can move it out.. Deco is right overstuffed and oversized furniture can never really look sleek but they have probably invested a lot of money in that furniture thinking it will last for years and they last thing that want to hear is that they made a expensive mistake. It is our purpose to do our best in arranging what they have and need in a functional and attractive way. The major issue I see in the room is the TV being way too high. The other issues are minor and can be fixed with accessories, changing items or de-cluttering.

Gosh, I certainly did not intend to be nasty with my floor comment. The OP asked about " everything". It is wonderful when some new paint, new furniture, and rehung pictures make things " nice"....but the reality is that often times there is some feature that is so glaring that it seems that you would be throwing away money by trying to ignore it. Believe me, I know! I have done that!!?

I understand 100% grape, but it is so much nicer to ask the HO if they would consider extending the wood flooring into the kitchen, instead of "as long as you have that tile, the room will never look good" Asking them to take out the mantle and lowering the TV may involve some elbow grease and some patch work, but could be done with little expense. And BTW no one said your comment was nasty. I think everyone here has great ideas and jump right in with your suggestions, but we must all keep the feelings of the HO in mind when we see huge mistakes (that we all have made) and many cannot just be undone today.

i would go with some larger prints on the wall and a lighter fabric on the furniture

the couch looks like it is a sectional. that she has reconfigured. thought maybe she could piece it into an L that is all. The chair is big. And may not work for the space.
