Susan, I bought one at "Petals" several years ago while in bloom. I thought it was the most beautiful, unusual flower I had ever seen. Then I planted it and never saw it bloom again! A couple of years ago I dug the entire thing up and potted it until I decided what to do with it. Strangely enough it began to grow and flower. I decided it must prefer living in a container, but that Winter all three pots of them rotted. I should have moved them indoors where they would have remained somewhat dry while dormant. Those darn "Mediterraneans" just can't be happy!!

Howeverrrrrrrr..........should you decide to purchase one ~~~because I know of two reliable mail-order sources~~~ let me know if they have deals on quantity purchases and I'll go in "halfies" with you ;-D

They do look beautiful but I really shouldn't get another plant that needs to be brought indoors in winter. Do you overwinter your elephant ears in your garage? This winter I lost a few and others just put forth a tiny leaf or two.

I cut mine back in Fall before the first hard frost and allow the severed tops to dry; cover them with plastic, add a layer of mulch, and I've never lost a one in the ground. I haven't had much luck planting any xanthosoma outdoors (nor c. 'Wentii' & 'Mojito'), and have not tried 'Stingray' or 'Electric Blue Gecko' in the ground yet.

If fact my little sister is supposed to visit this afternoon and remove dozens of "strays" before I'm forced to compost them. No one seems interested in them at the swaps anymore. I guess everybody has plenty by now (or at least the most common ones anyway).

I lost one 'Stingray' and two 'Baby Rays' over winter in the basement. Still have one 'Stingray' in the pond starting to look very healthy. How's yours?

My 'Stingray' is growing rather slowly in the ground. It is now about a foot tall and has five leaves which look somewhat distorted-disappointing. I am hoping that it will settle down and improve. I plan to pot it and bring it indoors this winter and will use your technique to get the other ees to overwinter in the ground. My 'Mojito' did not return after the winter. I covered the stump with leaves and put a plastic flowerpot over it but it didn't survive.

I have grown the Scilla in Z8, but I live only 17 miles to the FL border. They are in the ground and on the north side of my house. I do have a good wind break behind it. They have been here 5-6 years. Even the ice storm we had
did not kill them. The bloom is so unusual I make pictures every year they bloom.

How about sharing a picture with us. I've found a good source for them on-line. It might "inspire" me to order a couple of bulbs this Fall ;-D

The bottom one comes first and then they open up when they get older. (1)

The color is very true to their color.
