How many viable cloves do you have? You can try both ways if you have enough... Do you know if that variety needs vernalization? Sometimes they can have a mind of their own and come up on their time schedual, throwing your schedual off. Don't know if it was growth inhibitor or what. I have experience with leaving garlic in the ground planted in the spring (they didn't come up till summer) and harvesting it in the fall. I had little cloves and rounds. I let them cure and replanted the next spring.. The problem was that HERE it's best to plant in the fall for a longer growing season. So I had to take another year to get the saved plants on schedule... I was able to eat some of the smaller ones in the process too...
