Week 56: Looking back...and forward

I know I've already touched on this subject but I really think it is important for ALL of us, whether we are DIYers or hiring a full crew; to remember what we have accomplished!

It is easy to look around and see all the things that still need to be done, are our to do lists ever finished?!?!

Sometimes I think we get so caught up in what needs to be done that we forget or minimize everything that has already BEEN done.

If you are just joining our weekly threads then you may not be aware that that very concept was the impetus for the weekly thread.

So I ask you, what did you accomplish this week?

Did you come up with some new idea or floorplan? Did you get gardening work done? Did you manage to survive the week without burning your house down?!?

For me, this past week has been mostly helping my parents on finishing stuff on their MIL quarters. Today was pouring concrete. What.....fun.....

I'm sure you ALL know what it is like to be done with this project, like yesterday.

Since none of us own an instantamator we have to get by on small victories.

So please share. What did you accomplish this week? What are your goals for the next week?

    Thanks TG.

This past week I didnt accomplish very much, we had a very wet and cold week so gardening was not happening. Workwise I had a week of long hours.

2 cords of firewood was delivered so I have some serious stacking on the agenda. 2 yards of mulch got delivered too!

Is it an accomplishment to pick the tub I will be using in my masterbath, Wyndham Mermaid, 60". I dont know if this is progress because I think I have picked once before too. This time I stood my ground that I only wanted a 60" tub, I know I will never use a bigger tub because I will feel terrible about the amount of water it uses. This is a cozy tub, perfect for me.

I did not accomplish as much as I hoped to. In a nutshell...

Car: held for parts to come in the mail

    anniversary: Mission accomplished!

House: Major spring cleaning is done, I am still working on the electrical requirements for the rest of the renovation, and now know the right questions to ask the electrician. The main will likely need to be upgraded + who knows what else.

Other: great job studying German and exercising at least.

House wise, nothing. I'm trying to get a hold of my bathroom guy. He's very busy and not the best at returning calls, but he does a great job, so I just deal with it. LOL I'd like to get the show on the road though, so I think I'll text him Monday.

I ran 3 x 5km and just got in from 13km. I have a "race" in Toronto next weekend that is 15km. I think I'm ready! I'm going to go buy a weedeater today; it's on sale.

Last weekend I moved one son to St. Paul for the summer (he has an internship with a software company); this weekend I'm moving the other to Fargo (he has a summer reasearch job on campus). When they are both moved out, I can paint their bedrooms!

Two weeks ago, we had carpeted stairs replaced with wood, and new flooring in the foyer. This week I prepped the foyer walls for painting, and started cleaning baseboards (and refinishing as necessary). Hopefully I'll have that done soon, so I can post photos of the new stairs!

Well - I am new to this thread and my first post may be a bad opening but what I accomplished was a very needed, huge melt down on the 60th day of our remodel. Now that I got that out of the way - I am ready to get some stuff done this upcoming week.

Welcome, perky. Hang in there. We've all been there, too. Some of us here measure remodels in years.

I spent last week avoiding doing things on the house. I did get the old gutters torn off the shop and measured for new ones and then kept forgetting to call the gutter guys to make new ones. Maybe next week. I have all summer to finish, so no hurry. Looks like summer has arrived and everyone's lawns in my neighborhood are DEAD! Woo-hoo! No more mowing.

I got involved in a discussion in a layout thread that the OP seems to have abandoned for now. Perhaps it will revive. Hope it wasn't wasted time.

Worked all week, of course. Should be working right now but it's Saturday morning and here I am!

Next week? More of the same. I'm sort of on "vacation" right now. My job does not allow real vacations, so I've evolved into slowing down for a few weeks at a time to recharge. I've forgotten just how much everyday stuff I've missed doing over the last year.

Sometime today I will haul an old water heater from the carport to Habitat for recycling. Then I can do some cleaning out there while under shade. Too hot this weekend to work in the sun. We are having a rare June heatwave.

I am very happy! My mom and I managed to weed one big bed (the pine tree garden) and today we plant all the porch plants, to fill in the holes. Who knew there was so much space under all those weeds??? LOL

This is very big to us, since we have many gardens that need MUCH WORK, after three years of being more or less abandoned to the weeds. And when you live on a farm....weeds grow fast and big! So, the roses and many other plants are thankful, we finally have time to find them again.

In the house, we're one step closer to moving the office and getting ready to paint the sunroom (former very small dining room). We're hoping to have that done by the end of the month (pretty much can only do office-moving on the weekends) and then we can start the kitchen!

Oh lavender - how exciting for you.

I'm baby-sitting my nieghbours roses for 10 days and so far I haven't killed them.

That's wonderful Lavender, I'd love to see pictures of your gardens.

I went to Home Goods this morning to buy accessories for the remodeled bathroom. They didn't have what I was looking for in towels but I bought some that I liked. Since the room is all white I'm free to use whatever I want in the way of towels etc. to add color. I was hoping for something a bit colorful, maybe flowers but it was a sea of neutrals and blue today.

I also picked up an impact driver, which I am amazed at how much easier it is to drive screws with! I used it to secure the vanity to the wall. I was able to prop the backsplash up on the vanity and get the rest of the cap rail installed. Just waiting for the wood filler to dry before sanding, priming and painting. I was going to hang my towel bar but it was apparently delivered to the wrong house so that didn't happen.

I am really hopeful this project can be marked done this weekend. Then I need to start cleaning up my house. I don't know how the remodel of one small room can cause housewide chaos.

Today alone I accomplished making 3 different dozen cupcakes for a graduation party tomorrow. Picked up 6 pots of various annuals, planted the petunia's in my pots in the rose bed and lantana and salvia in an little garden I created around stumps and rocks with our downed trees wood chips.

We then went to the mainland to return some Macy's purchases from last night and bought more.

My weekly accomplishment was to not strangle students or staff at work..nor family at home. :>)

6 1/2 days of school left. Son #2 graduates Monday night.

We've decided to have a "heading off to WAZZU" bbq in Aug instead of trying to fit in a Grad Party in June amoung everyone elses..

I don't feel I did a lot last week, but I did go back and forth to MI from MD (10 hour drive) on [drum roll] one. ONE. ONE ONE ONE ONE tank of gas each way. I had my oil changed. I dumped a can of GumOut into the gas tank (18 gals or so) and filled it with the highest octane I could find. Cruise control the whole way. I arrived with still enough gas that my truck was not gasping, and didn't fill it up until I was coming home on Monday. I am shocked and amazed.

I did plant some hollyhocks I winter sowed. Let's see how much of them the deer leave alone. I am furious with these stupid creatures. They look in my back slider. Oh, for my poor doggy back! I also planted two of my JMs. A 'Red Pygmy' and 'Kamagata." They're in my new raised bed with soaker hoses, so hopefully they'll do better there, than in their pots with waterlogged roots. Oh, the things you learn you're doing wrong!

Picked up two, butt-ugly dressers on Freecycle. I'm trashing their particle board carcasses and keeping the wooden drawers for the cat tree I've been thinking about.

I also picked up an antique, full-sized Dauphine bed for $59. Needs work, but resale...
I also got 4 screens. I think they might have been pantry doors in one lifetime. They're unfinished, with pretty nice etched glass in the top panels. Again, my resale potential is great.

Sold 2 more antique windows, an antique set of French doors, its glass knob set, 4, 12' long, 8-10" wide raw cedar planks and gave away a ton of plants. I offered free plants - you dig on Freecycle and got 5 or 6 takers. I have more plants than most nurseries and want many gone, so I'll reoffer today.

Spent lots of time spraying the poison ivy.

This week I got 5 shifts (YEAH!) so I'll be working a lot. Tuesday I'm going to look at a warehouse of cabinet doors someone's purging on CL. Might find some I can use rather than making. Wednesday, I'm doing AB.So.Lutely NOTHING. And liking it, too!

Welcome, perky. It's amazing what a bit of craziness will do in manipulating certain contractors to do what you want, rather than what they TELL you you want!

Thanks Texas_Gem. I am so happy that we got our soapstone counters in last week and our sink! Still much more to go in the kitchen, but this really feels like progress. I wasn't expecting the installers to oil the counters, but they did. I bought a beeswax mixture that I was planning to use, but I guess I'll wait until some of the oil wears off before applying. I also asked to keep the remnants. There wasn't much, just a few very small pieces, but it would be fun to figure out something to do with them. A couple of trivets?

Hi, I have been following for 56 weeks, so I thought I would jump in today. I can't claim to be a DIY-er but my husband is. My role is support and admiration. I do some projects here and there and some gardening. I am somewhat good at shopping.

My husband and I split our time between two houses - the woodhouse and the river house. The daily rain last week put a crimp in my plans to do yard work at the woodhouse, but I did manage to apply some round up on the weeds which threaten to envelop everything in sight. I also sprinkled some deer fence to protect my hostas. The mulching had to be put off. The interior refresh of almost every room in the house is officially done after 6 months, so I organized the last room. Yeh! Excess has been pared down, everything is in its place, and the plastic boxes are out of sight.

Several weeks ago, retired DH decided that the basement needed attention, so he donated some items and old cabinets, reworked the sump pump, painted the already sheet rocked walls, updated the lighting, and cleaned the small awning window. I know that it has never been cleaned in the 39 years we have lived in the house. Let there be light! Last week DH put down the LVF in the basement without moving the pool table. He jacked up one leg at a time. He was also able to put some of the moulding in. It is looking great.

I am a retired teacher. Last week, I got some substitute teaching in and have 3 days scheduled for the coming week. I am also working on the last day of school. I sub at my former school, so it is more fun than work- REAL teaching with delightful interaction with students and teachers without the pressure of meetings, emails to respond to etc.

It's been a busy week, as they all seem to be! Mostly, I worked on our little powder room in preparation for final inspections. I installed a Kohler Memoirs toilet, which also involved installing the flange and water supply. I restored a funky little porcelain corner sink and installed it also. The porcelain wouldn't quite clean up, so I refinished it with an epoxy paint kit. Time will tell if it holds up, but it will be a low use room, so we might get by. The funky sink has funky faucet spacing, so I put in an adjustable bridge faucet. Lastly, I stripped countless layers of paint from the door, and installed it on barn door hardware. Since I'm getting ready for inspections, I'm also running down a checklist of small things that need to be done prior to inspection. Doesn't seem like I accomplished much, but I sure am tired!

    Christina, that Is GORGEOUS!!!

Thanks Springroz, I am really happy with it.

Local- yes, that IS an accomplishment! Glad you found your tub.

Schick- my anniversary was this weekend as well! Glad to hear the wife wasn't feeling too crummy.

Mgmum- good job!! I wish I was better on the fitness front, that's something I really should work on.

Ann- I look forward to the pics!

Perky- we've all been there, done that. Welcome to the thread!

Doug- you would think by now that I would be used to the fact that climates are different in different areas but I still find myself saying, "wait what?!?" when I read things like no more mowing. Summer is when we HAVE to mow!! Glad you are getting a reprieve.

LL- I look forward to seeing pics of the gardens.

Christina- bathroom looks great!! Congrats on finishing a project!

Terri- good idea waiting on the party for fall, one less thing to worry about at this hectic time of year.

Christine- I must admit I'm envious of your JMs, they looks so beautiful, I wonder if they would survive in my area? I'm so happy that tour excellent skills are turning into a lucrative side business for you!!

Happy2b- all are welcome here!! Nice to hear the projects are moving forward and YAY on the teaching!! All the good parts without all the beurocracy.

Mushcreek- I'm tired just reading your post, believe me you accomplished a lot! You will have to share final pics when it is all done. You have put so much work into your home!

As for me, if you are still reading after all of that, my weekend has been tiring and unexpected.

As I've mentioned before, we've been under an extreme drought for years now. We didn't mow once in 2011!! Well we've been flooded with rain water the past few weeks so my back yard that was torn up from construction has become weed/future tumbleweed haven.

In a span of maybe 2 weeks, I had weeds that were close to 3 feet tall!!

I'm happy to say I can now walk through my yard without worrying about snakes as we finally got it cleared out.

Also, my brother (some of you may remember how tenuous that relationship is) had his baby last night.

His wife was 34 weeks and the baby wasn't moving so she was rushed into an emergency c-section.

My nephew seems to be doing well for a 34 weeker and he should have no long term complications. I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted from dealing with family stuff while trying to support my brother.

Texas! Scary, but I'm glad baby is doing well. Also, I don't have 4 little kids! I have two boys who are technically old enough to manage themselves. But don't. LOL

Christina, what a change from the blue! It looks amazing! You must be so pleased!

I can't remember what else I read but I know I was tired from reading Mushcreeks entry. LOL

I spoke too soon - she did end up being sick after all. It caught up with her on Sunday and last night.

@christina - super jealous, especially coming from looking at everything from the other side of a master bathroom rebuild. That's actually what I'm working on today. I spent a few hours documenting everything in both panels so I can talk to an electrician and my other window is open to Houzz pictures so the ideabooks can become even more overstuffed.

Unfortunately the car will remain incomplete for at least another month. Two parts are backordered and should arrive in 3-4 weeks according to the dealer.

Christina, preeeettttttyyyyy bathroom! I particularly like the legs on your vanity.

I shaded a 'Kamagata' JM I put in the raised bed (wrong time of year) with some antique window screens. I have high hopes for this little one, who supposedly likes full sun.

I have Freecycle people coming over to dig a long list of plants I want to get rid of. Before I resort to Rounding-up this jungle. Anyone local?

Hi Springoz! Long time no see!

I finally got 5 shifts at work, which financially is great. I'm exhausted, which is no surprise, but happy-tired when I go to the debit card load place!

Ok. Gotta go get the mud off my hands. I'm sure it's clogging my keyboard.

    OMG.
I just spent the last 1/2 an hour killing swarming termites.
You'll never guess from where they're coming. Guess! Come on! Guess!
    No, that's not it.

They're swarming out of my raised garden bed I built last fall. We're talking OMG the sky is sparkly with termite wings sparkly!

Now... I've soaked the soil and mulch with the insecticide recommended to kill all living things. (Sorry all you purists.) Any idea if this'll get rid of future termites -- at least there!? OMG SWARMING, I SAY!

CEF- do you keep frontline plus for your pets?

The active ingredient in frontline is fipronil. Fipronil (brand name Termador) is what is used to treat termites and fire ants.

I usually buy a spray bottle of frontline from the vets office and have used it on termites and ants and it is very effective.

    Thank you!
I"m going to take a look to see if I can get this in a larger quantity. I'm going to have to soak that garden bed, I think.

Slightly OT but still kitchen related.

Last summer I started watching a friends son on the weeks that he had him. His dad doesn't really cook so every week with dad is a different restaurant and every week with mom is some variation of frozen fish sticks and french fries, etc.

Last summer I started teaching him how to cook and I am so proud to say that since then, every time he is at my house he asks if we can cook!

I am watching him again this summer; he just turned 10 a few days ago. He mentioned this morning that one of his favorite dishes is fettuccine alfredo.

I didn't have any fettuccine in my pantry so I improvised.

Here is a quick shot of my stove being used to the max while teaching this wonderful and enthusiastic boy how to cook.

We had rotini cooking, broccoli steaming, chicken grilling and we were starting the roux to make the alfredo sauce.

I love seeing this excitement in a child and sharing my cooking knowledge with him!! My hope is that here in a year or two he will be cooking his dad dinners so they don't have to eat out every night!!

    Just had to share!!

Next, to complete the picture: teaching him how to shop! Because I doubt mom or dad has a clue about that, either.
    Then, there's the clean-up.

He's lucky to have you. As are all your kids! And your DH. And us.

Christina, your bathroom turned out just as gorgeous as I thought it would. Congrats!

Remember my vow to do no more big projects for at least two years? Yeah, me too. At least no one was out there when it came down.

:0 Oh wow, so what's your projected start date? ;) (Glad no one was hurt!)

I spent yesterday morning working in my son's room. He is a senior in college, and probably won't live at home again. He took his twin bed, computer desk, and most of his junk; I have a queen bed (from my Mom's house) to put in there, but it took some rearranging to make it fit.

The room looks ton bigger! Now all I have to do is convince my sons that it's time for the foosball table to find a new home, and I'll have a real guest room! Oh, I still need to paint, but for my own peace of mind, I had to straighten up first, and figure out where the furniture will go.

    whoa... whaa?

Oh, Christina! The unit below my condominium's ceiling collapsed (1940s plaster/drywall/nails combination) and it was horrible.
Thank goodness this was outside. You think construction creates dust!?!
and thank goodness no one was lounging...
