The Lake Michigan beach sand I have here needs a goodly bunch of organic material every year to maintain a 6 to 8 percent level of organic matter. Shredded leaves, used as mulch, does wonders to help maintain that amount of Soil Organic Matter. The leaves that fall on the grass and get mulch mowed into the turf, and the grass clippings also mulch mowed into the turf provide a lot of needed organic material. Organic material added to soil also provides a food source for the various members of the Soil Food Web.
