It's a moth, but don't know what kind. It reminds me of those in the leaf skeletonizer group, Zygaenidae.

I'm very curious.....may I ask why you thought it to be one of the true bugs?

My impression is one of the ctenuchids of the arctiid, or tiger moths, but some prefer the Zygaenidae ID.

(note the antennae are damaged in this image)

(contacting what's that bug may result in a completed ID)

Or try: Barlow’s book on common moths of SE Asia, or even Seitz’s Macrolepidoptera of the World

rhizo and larry

Thanks for the pointers.

I have to admit that a moth did cross my mind, but something about their form made me immediately id as bug - not the shield bug group. On the otherhand it could just be that my brain was frying at the time, as it was 40C & 100% humidity. :-))

This has been identified at what's that bug as Phauda flammans, and it is of the type and family as surmised by rhizo, above.

"Red day-flying moth" is a common name.

Further research shows the caterpillar of this moth to be slug-like and it feeds similar to a cutworm, eating the entire leaf from the edges, rather than skeletonizing it.
