NOID name?

Usually I'm not too concerned with names and noids can stay that way 'cause it doesn't interfere with enjoying them, but I'm a little curious about this guy. I got him for free at an orchid show in Jan, the seller had a bunch of gorgeous paphs and then tucked down under a shelf was this beat up sad little av and when I noticed it she thrust it into my hands and said 'take it!' Apparently someone gave it to her but she didn't do AVs and it was failing so she just wanted it gone. She said the person who gave it to her said it was a "choice one" and that's what she wrote on the tag. But I can't tell if that's a name or an opinion or the name of the person it came from Mrs/Mr Choice.....? Who knows, so anybody recognize this violet?

Ignore the phal in the back and the leaves in the right bottom corner that are from another violet. Thanks!

Hi Velleta,

I recall when you lost your AVs due to the heat. It was very sad. I am so glad to hear that you have rebuilt up to 31! And also that your orchids survived!

It is certainly a lovely one! Hmmm, a number of violets are pink with a green edge so a definite id probably won't happen. I could hazard a guess that this is an Optimara space violet based on the leaves & their general availability. Of that group, Ever Harmony comes to mind. Its worth a look at the Optimara homepage.

It is unusual and probably a newer variety. When they said choice, they meant unusual or rare. This just confirms my belief that to most people, especially orchid growers, AVs are like a poor step-child that doesn't get much notice or attention. Glad you got it! But I have no clue as to the name of the variety or hybridizer. It is lovely and hope it grows well for you. Joanne

Fortyseven hi, I beg to differ I grow over one hundred orchids, and I have about thirty one AVs not counting suckers, if I did I would have near to sixty and honestly my AVs get the most of my attention. I mean if I accidently brake a leaf I get upset. My observation is that most orchid growers also grow AVs and they tend to be good at it too.

I lost all of my collection of AVs last year due to heat and I was so depressed that I hardly wanted to go in my grow room which also has some of my orchids. So it's unfortunate that seller was not an AV lover but very fortunate for the person who got it.

And by the way it's a BEAUTIFUL one, I so love green edges bloom and the leaves are so pretty, I only have one violet in my collection with that sort of wavey leaf, Double Jepordy. And it's one of my favourite. VELLETA

Chihiro I have that orchid! It is blooming next to me as we speak! (or type! lol). As for the violet, that is simply stunning! If you ever have an extra leaf to trade,,,,,! Rosie
