(Fire Dragon) Shantung Maple

I know they can be found in TX. I live in CA, but the owner said he doesn't bother with CA. Too many obstacles for it to be worth the hassle for him.

Does anyone know where I can find these outside of TX?

I don't know why Shantungs aren't used more, in CA. They do very well in SoCal outside of the desert. My sister has a truncatum/platanoides hybrid. I believe 'Pacific Sunset'. It's been in the ground for 12 yr's and is 20'. It handles our sodium and alkaline water better than any other Acer I know of. It doesn't show marginal leaf-burn until the mostly butter yellow fall colors start to show. Here and there even a splash of red.

Anyway, I thought 'Red Dragon' would be beautiful here. If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it very much.

Well, I did find it at Sooner's, but no way would I come close to paying $200 w/shipping. Looks like I'll be settling for Norwegian or Pacific Sunset instead. Thanks anyway!

Sorry that no one has responded to your post. These types of maples are not my specialty but the truncatum-platanoides crosses are excellent trees and should be widely available.

Have you tried calling local nurseries/garden centers to see if they carry the Fire Dragon or any other Shantung maple? Or try posting this request on the California Gardening forum to get some very local input.

    Thanks so much.

I'm in SoCal, where few people even plant trees anymore. No luck here, except a couple mtn. nursery's that will have Pacific Sunsets coming in late summer. Fire Dragon is grown in TX, and the owner told me that he refuses to bother with the state of CA. I will re-posrt in the CA Gardening forum. I really appreciate your attention.

    ltruett,

Thanks so much. I would appreciate that very much, and yes, I have the time and patience ... fortunately! I couldn't find a way to PM you with my info, so if you like you can tell me how or you can contact me, if there's a way. Enjoy the wkend.

    Pecci,

I couldn't find a way to PM you either. Just leave your email address if you would like and I'll email you. Here is a seedling from last year.

Interestingly seed from this tree also seems to put out a lot of dwarf sized trees. I put a regular size leaf in the picture to compare in another seedling from last year.

I tried messaging you. Did you receive it?

    Striking leaves. Thanks.

Contact J. Frank Schmidt & Son nursery in Boring, OR. They carry a lot of Shantung maples. www.jfschmidt.com They are a wholesale nursery but they will advise you of nurseries in your area that carry their maples.

Try Munn's Nursery from Oregon - Munn is friends with the founder/retired of Metro Maples in Texas is a pretty small farm with only one worker to help the owner to maintain so many trees... ( I think?). http://www.munnsnursery.com/  The regulations from CA over shipping from other states is why nobody wants to deal with California anymore.

Yes, CA is in a shameful state. They don't want to belong to the USA, any longer, until of course the next big fire, or earthquake! Right now, I have an Acer Truncatum 'Main Street'. It's doing well as far as marginal leaf-burn, but we have had very mild Falls with numerous SA Winds, so fall color has been weak. On the other-side of the yard is a rather newly installed Acer Rubrum 'Redpointe'. It did shockingly well. No leaf-burn until the fall coloring began, but still minimal. It turned a very nice orange-red, despite our very warm windy Fall.

No fall color for my fire dragon. Purchased from sooners plant farms. It's about 15ft tall now. It was 5ft when I planted it 2 seasons ago!

    More of yellow a brown.

Another maple I got from Mr Maple actually has some red leaves. Also a fast grower. The Acer oliverianum ssp. formosanum. Very heat tolerant.
