I'm doing the same thing right now!!! Make sure you get a small sample and paint a small area on all of the walls to check them out before you spend hundreds of dollars on the wrong shade of grey! I'm ising Sherwin Williams Silverplate for my living room and kitchen! I have all white trim and doors and my cabinets are maple with a mocha stain. This color from SW does have a slight blue undertone.

if you paint samples on walls, always sand afterwards before the real thing, and wash/prep walls well.

You're smart to be noticing your undertones! Definitely do samples, you've got a lot of different beiges to coordinate with. I like buying foamcore sheet pieces and painting them with my sample color so I can move them around better than painting the samples on the walls. I'm not a pro, so I can't make an actual suggestion. Seeing it and the light you have is so important in getting it right! Still, I'm sure you'll be able to find the perfect color, but it may take trying a few different ones to get it just right-it'll be worth it! I painted my family room a blue gray (after trying a zillion samples) a while back and just love it to pieces.

You can definitely do gray! And I think you will love it in your space. Google greige paints, and you'll find many good choices. Paint some card stock or posterboard, and be sure you like the way the paint looks against your wood floor first and foremost (since that isn't changing, and there's lots of it).

I find that a neutral that is not beige is a color that is hard to describe! For instance, is it blue or gray? Blue or green? Green or gray? I don't have the "gray" color number with me, but for staging and selling a house where we painted the whole thing, we used SW candlelight yellow and a color like the Krypton Hayley Daniels mentioned above. There was good visual flow from room to room. If this appeals to you say something and I will pst some pics. We are arranging furniture today.

Just repainted our whole townhome for resale in Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. It is a very popular neutral color right now. It's one of those colors that changes a bit depending on the lighting too; sometimes looks a bit taupe-ish, other times a deeper gray. Get a swatch and a sample and see what you think. Good luck!

I say go for a lovely sagey green. Will add life without overwhelming. Green is nature's neutral.

Find the right grey for you definitely and then choose a pop of color to carry throughout the rooms.

Where does the light come from - East, West, North or South? Try Behr Elephant Skin for an East or North exposure - doesn't look cold or blue - a really good neutral grey for "cold" light.

Personally, I think focusing too much on the rug color is going to skew all the warmer tones in your room. A soft sage or yellow green would brighten and freshen without throwing off the undertones in the rest of the area. If you want to add the grays, then I would do it with accessories rather than have the cool walls with the warm woods and furnishings you already have going there. But that's just me.

I think a sagey green with your kitchen wood and wood floors would look so fresh. For me grey is gray and your place looks so rich. The rug is worn and maybe a new one would compliment a green like Gilford Green by BM

I understand grey is the new neutral and very hot right now, but be careful because you have so much beige and brown, and gray may not go with your kitchen cabinets. I would recommend spending the money to have a color specialist/designer come in and advise you. It would be better having someone see your space in person that is good with color than to choose the wrong color. You might end up doing it over or cringing every time you look at your walls and asking yourself "what was I thinking"! Been there, unfortunately!

There's no reason you can't experiment with gray if you've seen finished spaces in those tones and like the look. A couple folks have already made some good color suggestions: I'd try SW 7648 Big Chill and/or 7649 Silverplate, as well as Ben Moore HC-172 Revere Pewter (almost a greige in rooms with lots of sunlight). But just painting walls gray probably won't be enough to get the change you seek. It appears that all your furnishings and accent objects are neutral. I feel the room could stand a touch of color somewhere to enliven it. At the same time, you might want to remove a couple of the black items. Swapping out the black pillows and another black piece for something in a color or a metallic would add a little energy. You might also consider painting your kitchen cabinets white, if you like that look.

Oh and whatever you do, don't paint your samples in tiny patches all next to each other, like shown in that photo. All that will do is confuse you. Put up BIG areas of color, with lots of space between. Some people like to paint a large section in the middle of a white foam core board to see the color fully isolated; I'm OK with that strategy too.

Warm grays are very popular now and I love the contrast of the warm colors you have in furniture and cabinets with a cooler wall color. My thoughts are to go to Sherwin Williams 7029 Agreeable Gray or 7030 Anew Gray. To go a little warmer gray try 7036 Accessible Beige or 7037 Balanced Beige.

I recently painted our living room, hallway and dining room Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray with Simply White trim. Very happy with how it turned out - wanted a nice neutral but definitely not beige!

So glad you found something you are happy with. Changing the wall color is a very cost effective way to really change the whole look of a space. Also try changing your existing artwork and lamps from other rooms to continue to freshen the look.

BEFORE you paint, please ask yourself if you are painting because you don't care for your furniture anymore? Many people are actually tired of their furniture and think painting a whole room will make it appear better. But new paint may just make your old furniture look older. I would consider what furniture, if any, I'd want to replace before I paint. Get a new chair or 2 or new sofa, then paint. I have a feeling it is not the beige walls that you are tired of but perhaps a piece of furniture or 2. Good luck, (I love your kitchen backsplash and perhaps painting the cabinets a rich cocoa would bring the kitchen up to date. Do that before choosing wall color)

I vote for a green like BM Manchester Tan-it is just one of those great neutrals which is hard to describe but goes with everything.

I would try a grey-green. I recently painted my bedroom/bath in a blue-grey. I was amazed how different the color looked in different lighting-store, bedroom, bath. It was too sky blue in the bath and too purplish in the bedroom. They adjusted the paint for me by adding more black for the paint in the bath and took out what was making it purplish and also adding more black-2 different colors but looked the same in different lighting. All was done in samples first. Now I had the grey I was looking for. I would add some colorful pillows for your sofas as well as color in accent pieces. That will help offset all the neutral tones and give the rooms some energy.

I lived with a light gray for years and loved it. It is a great background for art.

As the back splash is probably the most expensive item to replace, I would try to use a color in the backsplash. if the gray in the rug is not one of the colors get rid of that rug. Lowes currently has a ready-made sample of March Breeze a grayish color or Valspar Quail Egg in their Whites and neutrals brochure. also in brochure is "Cream in my coffee" and "coconut milk”. soft colors. not too much yellow or brown

Forget Beige! I love beige/brown with gray. Try SW sea salt for a bluish, greenish, slightly gray. I have it in my entire downstairs. You will love it with your cabinets & backsplash. Take a peak at SW tradewinds if you prefer more blue in your gray w/o going too bland. Buy a couple of paint samples & then decide. I like cool with warm & you will too.

SW Anew Gray goes with just about everything, plus it plays off of your warm tones well. This color allows you to decorate and change your accent colors as you wish without locking you into the steel blue/grays that are so popular now. I love Sw Marshmallow white as a crisp trim color.

We used SW Comfort Gray and Sea Salt, with SW Alabaster trim. Gray with a green / blue undertone. Looks nice with our kitchen cabinets similar to yours, and we have beige in our carpet and furniture.

My daughter used Manchester Tan in all her common areas and it is very dark and too gold/tan!

All 3 pictures in my first post were SW Comfort Gray. I used SW Sea Salt in the hallways, foyers, and laundry, & will attach pictures. The Sea Salt areas don't get as much natural lighting, so that's why I went with the lighter shade there. As you'll see, they don't look that much different from Comfort Gray. And the tone differs thru-out the day. 2nd pic shows Sea Salt in the Foyer and Comfort Gray in the sunny Great Room. Hope this helps!

Even though your rug is light-colored; your floors are medium/dark. I would recommend against a darker color. Go through samples of lighter gray-beige or earth-tone grays that are lighter than you have now. Something in the whiter shades. You may be surprised once you get a few samples as to which you like best.

Are you mixing dark brown and black with you other monochromatic furniture? If so, isolate the black accents in groups.

One simple way to blend gray into your room, without painting, would be to find throws and accent pillows that match or blend with the rug you like so much. It will bring the gray color you like further up into the room. Then, you can decide if you really want to repaint.

I agree with JudyG, that grey is beautiful and ties in with your rug perfectly. Also may i suggest more of a warm brown color (if youre too scared to stray from your beiges) or a grey with a serious army green undertone. One that makes your guests question the colour of your walls. The green is very in right now and will work with your white and beiges.

Another great color to try is Tradewind by SW. It is a subtle gray/blue or Austere Gray by SW. It goes slightly green depending on your light. Light is very critical in selecting paint colors. Always paint a sample and look at it in" your" light before deciding.
