Maybe you should look at the chair and see if it's an issue that could be solved with a new chair. That would be my first suggestion.

Secondly, you'd need something very flat for ease of movement. You could get a piece of commerical carpet cut to size and the edges serged. How fancy a solution did you want?

Thanks for the note. A new chair may work but it took forever to find a good one from a posture perspective. As for fancy, it does not have to be remarkable, just functional and good-looking.

As for the solution, your idea may work. My question was around the type of carpet fabric (if that is the right word) would go well. I saw someone mention jute, carpet tiles or an "indoor/outdoor" carpet. However, a commercial grade low pile carpet may be the way to go.

Commercial grade carpets are made to stand up to a lot of abrasion so they would be the best bet. Jute would disintegrate in a month. An indoor/outdoor carpet is plastic and the person sliding back and forth would hear a "sticking" kind of sound, I imagine.

I asked about the chair because I thought it might be old! No, best to keep it if it's a good chair. Put a thin underpad under the carpet so it will stay anchored.
