I also like a closeup of the branch and an overview of the entire tree.

I'd add smell if there is one. It's amazing how often we are asked on Name That Plant 'is this mint/oregano/lavender?' and the OP hasn't sniffed the plant.

6. Is any part of the plant fragrant? Describe it. (thanks flora)

7. Foliage/stem arrangement, alternate, opposite or what. (this really should be #1)

8. Is the plant armed with spines/thorns?

9. Does the plant release sap, describe it.

I agree there should be some type of instruction for tree ID request. However this is a tree forum, and the environment is VERY important to know not only the id of the tree but if they are asking for recommendation for types of trees and plants. This applies to the tree forum, lawn forum, and any forum that entertain questions about the applicability of vegetation.

Any request should include a specific location, not just North Carolina, a non specific location but distance with cardinal direction for a specific city. The tree recommendation will be quite different if you are 30 miles east of Wilmington NC or west.

Would it be possible for Houzz to some way tie these instruction to the compose window?

Is it ever appropriate to ask for a tree ID when you already know the answer, but are doing it more to create some interest and stimulate conversation? If yes, is there a cerain protocol one should folllow? As an example, can you identify this pretty petiole?

The need for these instructions is not confined to trees. The Name That Plant Forum has the same issues.

As maackia asked his last question, I would also answer "yes".

With regard to posting an ID request for something you already know - or at least think you do - I find nothing wrong with it. It is especially keen when there are few posts going on, and you have something peculiar with which to test the assembled ID-iots. I have one in mind...

Some think it rude if you don't divulge that you already know the answer; know your audience. If you perceive persnickety-ness, then say you already know and are just testing others' mettle.
